2. ASSESSMENT:
PsW appeared to be in good physical condition at the time of interrogation. PsW were students attending schools in PYONGYANG prior to induction into the NKA. PsW deserted the unit together at KANGGYE (BA9838). 5 Nov 50 and surrendered voluntarily to US troops. PsW were cooperative and of average intelligence. Information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
The above PsW were conscripted at TAEBO-MYON (YD1821) on 28 Sep 50. PsW stated. that there were a total of 450 conscripts in the unit which was under the direct supervision of the Home Ministry. The unit was composed of one Ind Bn commanded by a Lt Col (name unk). Bn in TAEBO-MYON conducting close order drill without weapons for 8 days, Then they marched into PYONGYANG and stayed there until 10 Oct 50, 11 Oct 50, the Bn Comdr told the troops that their mission was to proceed to KANGGYE that same day the Bn marched to CHONGDONG (10 km N of SUNCH’ON (YD5467), arriving 14 Oct 50. From there, the Bn travelled by rail to ORON (28 km N of CHONGDONG). From ORON the Bn marched to KANGGYE via YONGBYON (YE40ll) and HUICHON (BV6849), arriving 26 Oct 50. Upon arriving in KANGGYE, PsW were issued Russian rifles. The unit conducted close order drill and instruction on nomenclature of the rifle. 5 Nov 50, PsW and 4 others from the same Plat deserted and travelled south through the mountains. Upon contacting US troops 5 km S of KUJANG-DONG, PsW voluntarily surrendered.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
Ind Bn composed of 5 Inf Cos (approx 90 men per Co) and each Co was composed of 3 Plats. PWs stated their original strength was 450 men, but prior to PWs desertion 5 Nov 50, they estimated the Bn strength at about 300. The decrease in strength was due mainly to desertion.

c. Equipment:
Each man of the Ind Bn received a Russian rifles. Each squad had 1 LMG and the squad ldr was armed with a PPSH sub-machine gun. No other type of weapons were observed in the unit.

d. Dispositions:
Their unit was still located in the 1st People's Primary School in KANGGYE as of Nov 50.

e. Knowledge of Other Units:
PsW observed approx 2,000 CCF troops deployed along side the secondary road located between KUJANG-DONG and KAJANG-CHAM (BV450l40) o/a 18 Nov 50. The troops were dug-in in single man foxholes along both sides of the road and camouflaged with pine tree branches. Some were observed dug-in at the base of pine trees. PsW further stated that they by-passed the CCF troops because they had their NKA uniform on and were armed with only 1 pistol, which was later taken by a NK guerrilla. No CCF troops were seen on the hills along the road.
20 NKA guerrillas were observed at a unk village located approx (BV450143).

g. Morale and Propaganda:
Majority of the troops had no desire to serve in the NKA and the consensus of opinion in PsW unit was to surrender at the earliest possible chance. PeW picked up a surrender leaflet after deserting their unit, but threw it away after reading it because they were afraid to be caught with it.

4. GENERAL
a. Food and Ammo Supplies:
During their entire period in the Ind Bn, majority of the time, they ate only 2 meals per day. PWs believed the reason to be shortage of cooking utensils. Source and routes unk to PsW. Each man of the Ind Bn received 100 rds of ammo when they received rifles at KANGGYE.

b. Replacements:
PsW stated that they observed approx 50 replacement personnel in their unit on 1 Nov 50 at KANGGYE. No knowledge of where the replacement personnel came from, but stated that they were recruits and some were veterans.

c. Captured Equipment:
Observed few stragglers from south armed with US carbines

d. US Prisoners of War:
After deserting their unit, PsW met 2 ROK soldiers who had escaped from NKA and had heard that they had seen US PsW (number and date unk) at PYOKTONG (YE9905).
