1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KANG Ch’ang Sun (姜昌淳) (강창순)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was captured while going home 26 Oct 50.
Deserted his unit 24 Oct 50.
PW was cooperative, information seems reliable although limited.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
CHINNAMP'O Naval Base Hq, NAMPO HO, Engine Section, (as of 20 Oct 50.)
CHINNAMP'O Naval Base (code number 594 unit).
Composed of one ship NAMPO HO, two escort ships and one Marine Regiment.
CHINNAMP'O Naval Base composed of approx 1, 000 men (officers & EM).
NAMPO HO was a former Jap merchant ship called the SMITH-HO.
C.O. of the NAMPO HO was a Major.
Ass't C.O. - (one) Captain.
Ass't Culture Officer - (one) Captain.
Ship was divided into six (6) sections.

NAMPO HO had three (3) guns.
1 x 37mm - ammo unknown
2 x 45mm - ammo unknown
No naval mines or torpedoes on ship.
All officers carried TT TOKAEEV pistols with 14 rds each, and all EM carried SMG, 140 rds each.
There were 13 officers & 60 EM on the NAMPO HO.
There were two (2) escort ships which guarded the NAMPO HO.
They were called the 5th - I, & 5th - II escort ships. Each escort ship was 250 tons.
Each carried three (3) guns: one (1) 37mm, one (1) 45mm & one (1) 11.7mm AA gun.
There were 9 officers & 41 EM on each escort ship. No torpedoes or depth charges on escort ship.
As of 20 Oct 50, Naval personnel destroyed the CHINNAMP'O Naval Base before retreating.
There were three (3) Naval Bases in NORTH KOREA; one (1) each at CHINNAMPO, WONSAN and CHONGJIN, (WONSAN Base was called #1, CHONGJIN #2 & CHINNAMPO #3).
These bases came under the Naval Dept and the Naval Dept came under the National Defense Ministry.
CHINNAMP’O Base C.O. was a Colonel.
Ass’t CHINNAMP'O Base C.O. was a Lt Col.
Ass’t Culture Base C.O. was a Lt Col.
PW did not know what happened to the other personnel.

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (as of 20 Oct 50).
PW stated that their route of withdrawal (Navy & marine) was SINANJU to SINUIJU. Reason was unknown. PW did not see any other units.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 1 Jan 49 at CHINNAMP'O into the 594th Unit.
Received two months of close order drill - at CHINNAMP'O (also had training in amphibious. landing sparodically between Mar 50 - June 50).
PW also claimed that while on the ship they traveled 25 to 30 miles out to the sea, mostly on patrol duty, PW's ship was never in a fire fight.

7, FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food and ammo supplies were brought in from the base, Source of supply for base unknown.
Food was ample.

8. MORALE:
The morale of PW’s unit was low because they knew they were going to lose this war after hearing paratroopers had landed in SINANJU, o/a 24 Oct 50.

9. NAVAL:
PW stated that the only difference in the ship after taken over from the Japanese was the addition of the guns. Furthermore, PW claims to have absolutely no knowledge about minefields in North Korean waters.
