3. MILITARY HISTORY:16 Sep 50 - Inducted at CHUNCHON (春川) into the volunteer army.
o/a 19 Sep 50 - Approximately 650 men of the volunteer army departed CHUNCHON on foot and arrived in HONGCHON (洪川) the following morning. Approximately 250 additional men from unknown places joined the 650.
o/a 25 Sep 50 - These 900 men departed HONGCHON on foot, arrived at INJE (麟蹄) on 27 Sep 50 and continued movement towards the NE.
o/a 28 Sep 50 - The same group (900 men) arrived at WONTONG-NI (之通里).
o/a 29 Sep 50 - The same group departed WONTONG-NI on foot.
o/a 10 Oct 50 - The group arrived in KOTO-RI (古上里) and after resting one night the group headed southward for resupply.
o/a 13 Oct 50 - The group returned to the vicinity of HAMHUNG (咸興), received clothing, and again headed North same day.
o/a 18 Oct 50 - The group arrived at SANGPYON (上坪), locate 5 Km S of HAGARU-RI (下碣隅里) and departed the same town o/a 20 Oct 50.
o/a 22 Oct 50 - The group arrived in the vicinity of CHANGJIN (長津) and war for the first time called the 38th Independent Unit. The unit strength at this time was estimated about 700. The unit was composed of 8 companies, and each company consisted of 3 or 4 platoons. Only about 50 men in the entire unit were armed. Arms consisted of automatic pistols and rifles.
o/a 24 Oct 50 - PW deserted unit while the 38th Unit was stationed in the vicinity of CHANGJIN. Unit was not observed after deserting.
23 Nov 50 - PW was captured at HAGARU-RI by the US MP's.
4. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:While PW was serving for the 38th Ind Unit the unit was never engaged in action and was travelling most of the time.
Officers of this unit were from the NKA, But the officer's former units were unknown. PW states that the officers were those, who were formerly injured and were not capable of fighting in the front line troops. The ranking officer (Unit CO) was a captain (name unk).
PW heard form his Company Commander that this unit was enroute to MANCHURIA for training and equipment.
