Approx 300 Korean residents of MANCHURIA were inducted into the 38th Army on 23 Sep 50 in JEHO-SHENG. They were all given commissions and assigned as interpreters from Army to Company level (one interpreter per Co).
Most companies in the 38th Army had two or three Japanese who served as rifleman, machine gunners, or mortar crewman.
PW emphasized repeatedly that every man in the 334th Regt came with the Regt to KOREA. He insists that the 334th Regt maintains telephone communication with other regiments in the 112th Div. Moreover, he is certain that the 38th Army is intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River into KOREA.
No units or parts of units of the 38the Army have been integrated into the NKA.

3. LOCATIONS & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (as of 10 Nov 50)
Objective of the 112th Div, and 113th Division was KAECH'ON.
The 334th Regt was approx 16 Km northeast of KAECH'ON.
The 335th Regt & 336th Regt were approx 12 km southeast of KAECH'ON.
The entire 113th Div was somewhere northwest of KAECH'ON.
PW heard that in addition to the 38th Army, the 39th and 40th Armies were in KOREA.

4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into the 38th Army (CCF) on 23 Sep 50 in JEHO-SHENG (MANCHURIA).
Departed from JEHO-SHENG on 23 Oct 50 by train with the 112th and 113th Divisions of the 38th Army and travelled via the following places:

On 10 Nov 50, PW and 14 Chinese approached a village approx 16 Km East of KAECHON. As PW was the only one who could speak Korean, he entered the village to get food from the farmers. However, ROK troops were occupying the village and captured PW 101600 1 Nov 50.

5. PERSONALITIES:
LIN, Piao (林彪), CG (將軍), 4th Field Army.
*SAN, Shih-Pa (三十八), Regt Co (团長), 334th Regt, 112th Div, 38th Army
*The name "SAN Shih Pa" means "38" and is the alias that the 334th Regt CO uses.
The 38th Army had no Soviet advisers.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
The 334th Regt had suffered 10% casualties (killed, wounded & missing) but had received no replacements as of 10 Nov 50.

7. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES: (as of 10 Nov 50)
The 112th Div brought 10 days food supplies when it departed from JEHO-SHENG on 23 OCt 50. After this was exhausted, personnel subsisted by confiscating food from North Korean farmers.
The 112th Div had received no ammo supplies since departing from JEHO-SHENG on 23 Oct 50. Original ammo supplies came from TIEH LING-SHIH (鉄嶺市), JEHO-SHENG, MANCHURIA.

8. MORALE:
Personnel in the 112th Div had high morale until they entered combat in KOREA. They had found the Chinese Nationalist Army to be such a "pushover" that they thought the CCF to be invincible, but discovered the CCF to be a second rate army when pitted against the UN Forces. Therefore, the fighting spirit dropped sharply since coming to KOREA.

9. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
The 38th Army has the following means of communication available:
Wireless - To other CCF armies; to 38th Army Divisions and regts.
Telephone - To subordinate divisions, regiments and battalions.
Bugle - From regts to subordinate battalions, companies and platoons.
Whistle - From companies to platoons and from platoons to sqds.
Courier - To other CCF armies; to all echelons of the 38th Army.
Signal Flags - Unknown.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service, the 38th Army was not a volunteer unit, and instructions have not been given to the 38th Army personnel to appear to be volunteers if captured.
As far as PW knows, the 38th Army has not received amphibious training.
PW never heard of the Iron & Steel Brigade.
The CCF is recruiting in MANCHURIA by sending orders to city, town, and village chiefs for specified numbers of men between the ages of 18 to 25 yrs.
Korean interpreters in the 38th Army receive no pay but are issued 4 packs of cigarettes per month despite the fact that they had commissioned officer status in the CCF. All these Korean interpreters were conscripted into the CCF without being given a chance to refuse military service.
CNA personnel and equipment are integrated into the CCF units capturing them.
The general propaganda line for the CCF entry into the Korean war was as follows:
The CCF must liberate KOREA.
CHINA must help the Korean masses.
CHINA must drive out American imperialism from ASIA because it is a threat to CHINA's security.
