FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1203) 10 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHANG, Shun-I (張順義) (Chinese)
RANK: Pvt (战士)
ORGN: 4th Field Army, 38th Army, 113th Div, 338th Regt, 2d Bn, Arty Co, 3d Plat, 8th Sqd
DUTIES: Ammo bearer
EDUCATION: Primary School, 5 yrs
AGE: 20
OCCUPATION: Railroad worker

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative, but lacked information on units, except his own company. Information seems reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF UNIT:
4th Field Army composed of the 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st and 42nd Armies. (There are more but designations and number were unknown).
38th Army was composed of the 111th, 112th, and 113th Rifle Divisions.
113th Division was composed of the 337th, 338th and 339th Rifle Regts.
338th Regt was composed of the 1st, 2d and 3d Rifle Battalions.
2d Battalion was composed of 3 rifle companies and 1 arty company.
1 Arty company composed of 3 to 5 platoons, depending on the troops available.
There were no North Korean troops in PW's unit before or after crossing the YALU River.
Chain of command is same as prior to crossing the YALU River.
An Artillery Company was attached to each rifle battalion. No other arty units known. No vehicles were available to PW's company. PW's company was composed of 3 platoons.

70mm Gun (Japanese) 1 (70 rds each)

1st Arty Platoon composed of approx 50 men and 2 x 70mm Guns (Jap), 70 rds each.
2d Arty Platoon composed of approx 30 men and 1 x 70mm Gun (Jap), 70 rds each.
4th Arty Platoon was a service platoon consisting of approx 50 men and no arty pieces.

Arty Company: 11 Officers and 159 EM
Equipment & ammo:
70mm Gun (Jap) 4 (70 rds each)
Pistols 11
2d Rifle Battalion: Officer & EM 700

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
PW's unit (arty company) was believed to have an offensive mission. No details were available on other units. (No place names available)
When PW first arrived in KOREA, 20 Oct 50, his company commander was heard to say that the 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st, and 42d CCF Armies are presently in KOREA, so winning this war would be simple, and encouraged the men to fight hard.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into the CNA, Jul 48, at TIENTSIN.
Captured by the CCF in Jan 49 in TIENTSIN. Entered the CCF and assigned to present unit.
The 113th Division departed TIENTSIN March 49, and arrived at HONAN (河南) 10 days later. Departed HONAN March 49 and arrived at HUPEI (湖南) during latter part of March 49. Departed HUPEI during the early part of June 49 and arrived at HUNAN (湖南), 10 days later. Departed HUNAN (湖南), early part of Aug 49 and arrived KUANGHSI (廣西). Departed for HUNAN (湖南), Sep 49 and remained for 1 week, Departed for HONAN (湖南) and arrived 2 months later. Departed HONAN, May 50 and arrived at TIEHLING (鉄嶺) June 50. Departed by train o/a 19 Oct 50 and arrived at an unknown place on the MANCHURIAN side of the YALU River. Crossed the YALU River o/a 20 Oct 50. Unit remained in the hills from the time it entered KOREA, but did not engage UN Forces in any battle. PW was captured when he overslept in the hills.
The entire 113th Division came to KOREA. It was believed that the 111th & the 112th Divisions are presently in KOREA.

7. ARMOR & ARTILLERY:
PW had heard that there was a tank unit in the 38th Army, but he had never seen any.

8. Food & AMMO SUPPLIES:
When PW first crossed the YALU River, o/a 20 Oct 50, 34 trucks were seen hauling food and ammo supplies from MANCHURIA to KOREA, during the night. Supply route was unknown.
20 to 26 Oct 50, food was adequate; but due to aircraft, supplies coming in were greatly reduced.
The artillery company did not receive any ammo after they received their initial issue, of 70 rounds, per gun. Guns were not fired up to the time PW was captured. Reason unknown.

9. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
A field telephone set was used between the artillery company and the battalion.
