Upon arrival, PW and 8 others were assigned to the Rcn Co, 2nd Plat, 4th Sqd, which was attached to the 249 Brigade, which had its Hq in WONSAN. His company was composed of two platoons of about 100 men each and they received ten days of training. Company was engaged in digging air raid shelters and trenches within the city and also chopping wood for winter until 5 Sep. During his stay at WONSAN PW was physically weak and did no work. Then, about forty men from the PWs platoon were ordered by the Co CO to go south and reconnoiter for enemy troops who were reportedly nearing toward WONSAN. 7 Oct they arrived at an unknown mountain about 6 km south of TONGCHON where they observed a large concentration of enemy troops and trucks (more than 30 of them). Upon reporting their observation of the Co CO told them to retreat since he felt that it would be futile to fight them. PW, his CO and 13 others retreated north over mountain trails, when they were attacked in the vic ANBYON o/a 12 Oct, by enemy forces at which time the CO was killed. 2 Nov upon arrival at TAEDONG MYON (BA8018), he and ten others escaped from his group and headed south for he had heard from a NK soldier that the parent unit was located at CHONCHON MYON (BA8509). 4 Nov upon arrival at IPKWON MYON (BV9789) they found their brigade and were again assigned to the Rcn Co then numbering about fifty men. 5 Nov PW and three others were ordered at night by their CO to report to CCF forces located at YONGWON for the purpose of reconnoitering enemy positions. Upon arriving at YONGWON 10 Nov they picked up UN Safe Conduct Leaflets and after inquiring of villagers as to the location of enemy troops sought them out and surrendered at a location approximately 16 km south of YONGWON.
2. PW stated that the 249th Brigade, was composed of 8 battalions. When he found the brigade on 4 Nov at IPKWON MYON, he heard from one of the soldiers there that the brigade strength was 2,500. Due to his very brief stay there, he did not know the breakdown of the brigade. His Rcn Co had fifty men armed with PPsh SMG's and Russian rifles.
3. The 249th Brigade CP was located at IPKWON MYON at the time PW departed on 5 Nov. IPKWON MYON is a small twon of about 80 houses, and about 300 × 150m in size, located between mountains. The biggest building in the town was a school located on the east side of a secondary road passing through the town and about 350 meters NNE of the center of town. PW did not know the exact location of the CP. His Co had three houses about 100 meters SSW from the center of town. He believes that it is still there.
