Approx 25 North Korean personnel (used as Korean interpreters) came with the 38th Army from MANCHURIA.
PW's unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU.
PW's unit has never been integrated into Korean units.

LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
The entire 38th Army (112th, 22nd, 223rd and an Independent Division) crossed the YALU River from TUNG-HUA (通化) and arrived at MANPOJIN (KOREA) on 24 Oct 50.
PW's unit (112 Div) waded through the water, which was approx 4ft deep throughout, because a steel bridge was bombed by UN airplanes immediately after the other three divisions had crossed over the bridge. The unit vehicles were also able to ford the river.
PW believed that the 39th, 40th, & 41st also crossed the YALU River after PW's unit, because he observed the 41st Army at a mountain (location unk) about 3 days after his entry into KOREA. PW was told by a fellow soldier that these troops were from the 41st Army.
After travelling for sometime (unk) with the 112th Division, PW heard from his Company Commander that they were on the 59th Parallel (location unknown) as they arrived at a mountain o/a 6 November 1950.
PW's unit had never made contact with UN troops, although they occasionally saw UN trucks & troops passing them at night o/a 6 November 50.
PW stated that about 150 troops of PW's company (2nd Company) were killed when they attacked an enemy convoy on 7 Nov 50, location unknown.
During this battle, PW with 2 others deserted from his company at 080200 7 Nov 1950.
After being separated from the other two men, PW was captured by ROK troops, 080400 7 Nov 50.
PW believed that the 38th Army units were surrounded by UN troops at the time of his desertion.
PW did not know the exact location and activities of the 38th Army because he did not know Korean geography.
Unit mission was unknown.

PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Served in the Nationalist Army from 23 Aug 48 to 10 March 50 at TIEH-LING HSIEN (鐵嶺縣).
After this unit had been disorganized and routed by the CCF o/a 10 March 50, the PW returned home and lived at MUTANCHIANG (壯丹江).
Inducted into the CCF (4th Field Army, 38th Army, 112th Div, 335th Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 1st Plat, 1st Sqd) on 30 Jul 50 at MUTANCHIANG (壯丹江).
PW received approx 2 months of Inf Training with the unit prior to the 38th Army's departure on 18 Sep 50.
The 38th Army departed from MUTANCHIANG by train and arrived at TUNG-HUA (通化) on 21 Oct 50.
Marched from TUNG-HUA and crossed the YALU River, arriving at MANPOJIN (KOREA) on 24 Oct 50.
After travelling about 15 days in Korean territory, they arrived at a mountain (location unk) on 6 Nov 50.
PW deserted from his unit (2nd Co) during the battle with UN Forces on 7 Nov 50.
No place names and locations available due to unfamiliarity with KOREA.
PW's unit (38th Army) did not participate in the invasion of HAINAN Island.

FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of the 38th Army brought 6 days ration (2 kg rice and 2 kg bread) when they crossed the YALU River.
After their ration was exhausted, they obtained food chiefly from farmers by confiscation.
Ammo supply: PW used only 20 × rds of small arms ammo from his original issue of 35 rds. No ammunition was issued after the original issue o/a 20 Oct 50.

MORALE:
Morale of the 38th Army was low due to the lack of food & constant air attacks. Furthermore, 2/5 of the 38th Army troops were formerly with the Nationalist Army. Among these, the question is raised as to why they had to help the NK army when they have been having difficulty in managing their own internal affairs in CHINA.

US PW's:
Negative.

SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
There were only two (2) field telephones used on a division level. At Regt and below, messengers were used.
