FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1216) 13 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and talked freely throughout the interrogation.
Information seems reliable.
PW taught uneducated troops how to write Chinese characters and songs.

3. T/O &E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Field Army, 38th Army (TUNGAN Unit (東安部), 113th Div (2nd Det 二支隊), 338th Regt (三三八大隊) 1st Bn Hq.
4th Field Army (四野戰軍) was composed of 3 Corps: 13th Corps (13兵团), 14th Corps (14兵团), and 15th Corps (15兵团).
13th Corps (13兵团) was composed of 3 Armies: 38th Army (38軍), 39th Army (39軍) and 40th (40軍).
38th Army (38軍) was composed of 3 Divisions: 112th Div (112師), 113th Army (113師) and 114th Div (114師).
113th Div was composed of 3 Regts: 337th Regt (337团), 338th Regt (338团), and 339th Regt (339团).
338th Regt (338团), was composed of 5 Bns: 1st Inf Bn (1營), 2nd Inf Bn (2營), 3rd Inf Bn, 1st Arty Bn (1砲兵營) and 2nd Arty Bn (2砲兵營).
1st Inf Bn (1營) was composed of 4 Companies: 1st Co (1連), 2nd Co (2連), 3rd Co (3連) and 1 Heavy Weapons Co (機砲連).
1st Inf Co (1連) was composed of 4 Platoons: 1st Plat (1排), 2nd Plat (2排), 3rd Plat (3排) and 1 Arty Platoon.
1st Platoon was composed of 4 Sqds: 1st Sqd (1班), 2nd Sqd (2班), 3rd Sqd (3班), and 1 LMG Sqd (機銃班).

No information concerning other Armies and Corps of the 4th Field Army.
PW states that there were one North Korean interpreter in his company and two in the Bn Hq, who came with the 38th Army from MANCHURIA.
PW's unit was intact under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU.

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW stated that the entire 38th Army crossed the YALU River by train from CHI-AN and arrived at unknown place in KOREA o/a 24 Nov 50.
After this point PW with the 1st Bn marched southward following a highway passing through HUICHON (의천) and arrived at KUJANG-DONG (국장동) o/a 2 Nov 50.
After travelling three (3) days from KUJANG-DONG, the 3rd Bn was attacked by ROK troops on TAMANCHAN (泰安站) (location unk).
During this battle, PW with another comrade was left while other troops fled toward the mountain.
PW estimated about 3/10 of the 3rd Bn personnel were casualties in this battle o/a 10 Nov 50.
PW stated that the objective of the 38th Army was SINANJU.
PW stated that they dug foxholes and slept during the day and marched in the night because of UN air attacks, during the unit's movement.
PW believed that the entire 338th Regt's units were in this vicinity at the time of his separation from the 1st Bn Hq. The 338th Regt Hq was located within 2 km from the 1st Bn Hq (location unknown).
PW heard from one of the culture officers in his company that the 38th, 40th, & 42nd Armies of 4th Field Army came from KOREA.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the CCF (13th Corp, Southern Labor Unit - 十三兵团南下工作隊) 21 Aug 49.
He was with the above-mentioned unit for one month in HUNAN-SHENG, CHANGTE-HSIEN (沽南省常德縣). No training was received.
Oct 49, PW was assigned to the Culture Unit, attached directly under the 38th Army, where he received six (6) month's schooling in Political Education.
The Political Education course consisted of three (3) subjects as follows:
(1) What are New Democratic Principles? (什么是新民主主義)
(2) Reeducation of the Intelligentsia (怎样改造知識分子)
He became a culture instructor after he graduated at RO SAN (羅山), D/U Jul 49.
PW was assigned to the 38th Army, 113th Div, 338th Regt, 1st Bn Hq as a political officer from Jul 49 to Aug 50. The 38th Army moved to KAI-YUAN (開宗) in Aug 50. They remained there until 23 Oct 50.
The entire 38th Army units departed from KAI-YUAN (開宗) by train and arrived at a point (approx 40 Km into Korean territory after crossing the YALU River) on 24 Oct 50. (location unknown).

7. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of 38th Army brought over 3 days ration with them when they crossed the YALU River.
After their rations were exhausted, they confiscated from from farmers as they advanced south.
Ammo: Each infantryman received one issue of 80 rds of small arm ammo when they left MANCHURIA 23 Oct 50.

8. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
Above the Bn level, field telephones were used.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW stated that the troops were told by the Regimental Commander not to become prisoners. They did not receive instructions to appear to be volunteers if captured.

Pay Rate:
Pvt (战士) - 80,000 Yuan
Plat Ldr - 100,000 Yuan
Former Nationalist soldiers (not all) were recruited into the CCF. Captured equipment was utilized by the CCF at the present time.
Political officers instructed two things to troops. They were as follows:
Stimulating Morale (形勢问題)
Stimulating Thought (思想问題)
