PW deserted his unit and surrendered. PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a farmer at HONAN HSIEN (湖南省) prior to being inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army in Sept 1945. PW was cooperative but of below average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted thru a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese and information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation. Previously interrogated by 1st Cav Div IPW Team Report No 0131, dtd 10 Nov 50.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army in Sept 45 and served in the Nationalist Army until Jul 48 at which time he was captured by the Chinese Communist Army at CHINJU (金州). After capture, PW was integrated into the Communist Army and received five months of Inf training. Upon completion of training, PW was assigned to the 168th Div at CHINJU. PW remained at CHINJU until Aug 50 at which time the 168th Div moved to MUKDEN. In mid-Sept the 168th Div moved back to CHINJU and upon arrival there, PW was transferred to the 112th Div, 335th Regt. 15 Oct 50, the 335th Regt departed CHINJU by train and arrived at ANTUNG on the following day. Immediately after detraining, the 335th Regt crossed the YALU River and proceeded south on foot. 335th Regt dug fox holes. Three days later 335th Regt was engaged and when the Regt withdrew, PW deserted and surrendered.
Unit Organization and Strength:
112th Div consisted of the 333rd, 334th, and 335th Regts. Each Regt consisted of 3 Bns. The 1st and 2nd Bns of the 335th Regt were Inf Bns, each consisted of 3 Rifle Cos. The 3rd Bn consisted of 3 Cos; a Rifle Co, a MG Co, and a Mortar Co. Each Co consisted of 3 Plats.
Strength of the 335th Regt was approx 2,100. Strength of each Bn was approx 450 and Co strength was approx 150.
Equipment:
PW's Co had 3 LMGs and 3 HMGs. Mortar Co had 6×81mm mortars. Majority of the men were armed with Japanese type 38 rifles and each rifleman carried 4 hand grenades.
Communications:
Co Comdr and Plat Ldrs used a flute to assemble the men. PW knew the following two signals.
1 blast - Call for Runners.
2 blasts - All Men to Assemble.
Morale:
Morale of PW's unit was low due to lack of food. Majority of the men wanted to desert but were unable to do so because of the strict surveillance by their officers. Approx 50% of the troops were former Nationalist soldiers.
4. GENERAL:Food and Ammo Supplies:
When PW's unit departed ANTUNG, each man carried 4 days rations. Since then no additional rations received. After the 4 days supply was exhausted, PW ate corn which he obtained from fields.
When Co departed ANTUNG, it had 7 boxes of MG ammo (280 rds per box), however, after the battle only 3 boxes were left in the Co. Each man with a rifle carried 150 rds. Men without arms carried 280 rds each. No additional ammunition was received after crossing the YALU River. PW also stated that the Regt had approx 15 horses which were used in transporting mortars and mortar ammo.
