2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be of average intelligence. PW was cooperative but unable to remember place names and dates. PW considered fairly reliable by interrogator.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
3 Jul 50: PW conscripted with 1,500 conscripts into NKPA, South SINUIJU. Received 1 month basic military training. Fired 3 rounds.
3 Aug 50: 1,500 conscripts activated into 574th Ind Regt. Left South SINUIJU same day by rail.
5 Aug 50: 574th Ind Regt arrived at PYONGYANG via SINUIJU (新義州).
10 Aug 50: 574th Ind Regt arrived at SEOUL via SARIWON (沙里院), KUMCH’ON (金泉), KAESONG (開城).
11 Aug 50: 574th Ind Regt left SEOUL by rail.
12 Aug 50: 574th Ind Regt arrived at WONJU via KOKSU-RI (谷水里). Continued march south.
15 Aug 50: 574th Ind Regt arrived at ANDONG via CH'UNGJU (忠州), TANYANG (丹陽), YONGJU (榮州). Continued march in southeast direction.
21 Aug 50: 574th Ind Regt engaged by ROK Army units in wooded hills 8 km inland, between YONGDOK and P’OHANG DONG. 574th Ind Regt withdrew west after 8 hours battle. Showered with surrender leaflets from US aircraft following withdrawal. Heavy casualties (number unknown).
28 Aug-2 Sep: 574th Ind Regt engaged twice by ROK Army units in wooded mountain 40 km North of YONGCH'ON (永川). 574th Ind Regt withdrew north. CO killed in action.
13 Sep 50: 574th Ind Regt strength reduced to 250. No replacements. Joined by 300 stragglers from 15th Div in wooded area 12 km Northeast of YONGCH’ON. PW heard stragglers were remaining elements of 15th Div.
14 Sep 50: 574th Ind Regt deployed in wooded hills overlooking river (Northeast-southwest) at point 12 km Northeast of YONGCH’ON. Arty-mortar shelling from ROK Army positions. 3 x 122mm Howitzers similar to 122mm M1938 Howitzer observed in area. Concealed with three branches.

Intentions:
574th Ind Regt objective was to enter and occupy YONGCH’ON after 15th Div took the city.

Morale:
Very low morale. Mainly because of insufficient rations consisting of one or two rice balls (Size of balled fist) every day. Rice obtained locally from villages. PW believes majority of troops in unit will surrender at first opportunity.

Unit Clothing:
Troops issued one set summer uniform, Jul 50, South SINUIJU, were warned to make clothing last until Dec 50 when winter uniforms would be issued.
