1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative. Information seems reliable because of his long military service since March 1949. PW admitted at the end of this interrogation that he was using the alias up to this time. However, he could not continue the deceit in view of the considerate treatment he has received as a PW. The chief reason for using the alias was the fear of jeopardizing his family in North KOREA. He believes that there is a possibility that they might be killed by North Korean troops if the UN releases the list of North Korean prisoners.

3. T/O & E OF PW'S UNIT:
9th Div composed of three (rifle regts (approx 4,000 men).
1st Regt: Approx 1,260 men (Inf). Equipment unknown.
1st Bn: Approx 420 men (Inf). Equipment: one plat (45mm guns) one Co (9 x 82mm mortars) and three (3) rifle companies.
3rd Co: Approx 140 men (Inf). Equipment: one (1) DP LMG in one (1) platoon, 27 SMG’s, rifleman armed with M-1 rifles.
Ammo: Each LMG (800 rds); each SMG (140 rds); each rifleman (70 - 100 rds).


4. DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNIT:
1st Regt, 9th Div Hq was located immediately West of YONGSAN on the Northern of NAKTONG River on l Sep 50.
1st Bn, 1st Regt Hq was located in the vicinity N of YONGSAN 1 Sep 50.

These two (2) men were wounded on 1 Sep 50 and 2 Sep 50, respectively.

7. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 3 Jul 49 at KASAN DONG.
Received one month basic training as rifleman.
A group of about 20 men, after receiving approx 1 month training, departed KASAN DONG on 15 March 49 by train and arrived at HAEJU d/u March 49.
This same group was assigned to the 3rd Bn, Border Constabulary Unit in HAEJU. They were used as the guard detail at the Bn Hq area during the period from d/u March - June 49. From the 3rd Bn, they were transferred to 6th Bn of the same unit. Approx 420 men were used for construction of trenches and foxholes along the 38th parallel East of HAEJU from 25 June 49 to 25 June 50.
1st Bn, 1st Regt, 9th Div departed HAEJU on 25 June 50 by train and arrived at YONGAN, d/u, (stayed 3 days) and traveled to KYONGSONG, stayed about 15 days till 5 Jul 50.
The Bn departed KYONGSONG on 20 Jul 50 and marched, passing through INCHON (1 week's stay), SUWON. PYOHGTAEK, CHONAN. CHOCHIWON, TAEJON, KUMSAN, MUJU and arrived at HYOPCHON on 25 Aug 50. They stayed here for five (5) days. The Bn crossed the NAKTONG River on l Sep 50.
PW was deposited in a deserted farm house because of malaria. He was captured by US troops while hiding here, approx 2 miles E of KUMA School on 041600 Sep 50.

8. ARMOR:
PW saw three (3) tanks after crossing the NAKTONG River on 1 Sep 50. (Type unknown.)

9. FOOD & AMMO:
Since the unit crossed the 38th parallel, food was obtained mostly from the occupied areas as they advanced south. PW did not cat rice for three days after crossing the NAKTONG River on 1 Sep 50. He went out to farms and dug sweet potatoes for subsistence.
PW received one (1) issue of 100 rds of rifle ammo at INCHON.
PW stated that food & ammo supply lines were completely cut off to the 1st Bn, 1st Regt, 9th Div as of 1 Sep 50.

10. REPLACEMENTS:
20 replacements joined the 3rd Co when they left KYONGSONG on 20 Jul 50.

11. MORALE:
The morale of the PW’s unit became low, especially after they crossed the NAKTONG River. Contributing factors were: no food or ammo, constant enemy air attacks & artillery shelling.

12. US PW'S:
Observed 3 truckloads of US PW’s (approx 100) in KYONGSONG on 5 Aug 50.
Observed 2 prisoners walking with 2 North Korean guards toward HYOPCHON, West of the NAKTONG River on 1 Sep 50.

13. MEDICAL:
PW stated he had malaria after crossing the NAKTONG River from 28 to 31 Aug 50.
