Subject was cooperative and of average intelligence but due to his short term of service, scope of observation was very limited. Reliability fair.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
| 9 Aug 50: | Inducted into NKPA at his home address in S. Korea. 53 men between the ages of 18 and 37 inclusive were inducted in SANCH'OK MYON. The men were told to attend a conference and as soon 80 the group was assembled, an announcement was made by a local communist that all men were to be inducted into the NKPA on that date. An estimated 500 men attended the meeting but when the announcement was made, all but 57 of the men fled. Subject claims that the 57 men remained because there were three armed NKPA troops who threatened them with their rifles. The 57 men were fed and each given a package of cigarettes. The men were then taken to UMCHONG MYON where they were given physical examinations. 4 men with eye and other defects failed to pass the examination and were returned to their homes. The physical examinations were given by a civilian physician. The men who passed were marched to CHUNGJU (忠州). |
| 12 Aug 50: | 53 conscripts arrived CH’UNGJU. The city was attacked by US aircraft on 12 Aug 50 and the group was ordered to the outskirts of the city. They remained on the outskirts of the city until 18 Aug 50, when they returned to UMCHONG MYON. The purpose for going to CH'UNGJU is not known. |
| 18 Aug 50-28 Aug 50: | PW remained at the UMCHONG MYON Primary School. When subject returned 18 Aug 50, he noticed that 250 additional men had been conscripted and billeted at the school. The men received one hour of military training and one hour of political training each day. The men were not issued uniforms or weapons. The group was under the supervision of 6 NKPA men. There were no cases of desertions because the men were told that anyone who attempted to desert would be shot. |
| 28 Aug 50: | Approx 500 conscripts arrived from the neighboring villages which brought the total number assembled to about 800 men. None of the men were armed or in uniform. The 800 men marched from UNCHONG MYON at about 2000 hours. |
| 29 Aug 50: | The group arrived in CH’UNGJU. The group rested in CH'UNGJU until 2000 hours 30 Aug 50. There were no incidents between 28 Aug 50 and 30 Aug 50. Subject saw about 15 troops mounted on horses on 30 Aug 50, and heard that a large number of mounted troops were stationed in the vicinity. |
| 8 Sep 50: | 800 men arrived at TAEDUN (1150-1460) (3 km N of castle) and were assigned to various units of the 1st Div. Details unknown. 15 men, subject included, were sent to the castle enclosure where they were assigned to the 7th Co, 3rd Bn, 14th Regt. Location of other units, 14th Regt unknown. PW issued weapons and uniforms. They came from unit casualties. |
| 12 Sep 50: | The 7th Co was deployed on the ridges approx 4 km South of the castle. Disposition of other unite unknown. The 7th Co did not make any contact with the enemy between 8 Sep 50 and 12 Sep 50. At dawn 12 Sep 50, the 7th Co was surprised by ROK forces am suffered heavy casualties. Losses unknown. PW was taken prisoner. |
Morale:
The morale of the troops was very low since they were aware that they lacked adequate training and equipment.
