FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0767) 14 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Very limited military information. PW states that the UN Safe Conduct Pass will prove worthwhile if used more extensively by the UN in its psychological warfare program.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
25 Jul 50: PW and an estimated 3,000 S. Koreans conscripted into the NKPA at P’YONGT’AEK.
1 Aug 50: 3,000 marched south. No training received. No arms issued.
15 Aug 50: 3,000 arrived small village just E of CHINJU. 500, including PW, remained at this village, 2,500 marched on towards HAMAN and were assigned to the 6th Div.
18 Aug 50: 500 marched E. Arrived YUDONG located approx 12 km W of HAMAN after 2 days march through mountains. Received 5 days of basic infantry tactics under unidentified NKPA officers.
25 Aug 50: 500 distributed among various units of the 6th Div. 50 to 60, including PW, assigned to 1st Bn, 15th Regt. Out of this latter group, PW and about 20 others assigned to 2nd Co. Replacements issued either battleworn Russian rifles or old Jap M99 rifles. Replacements obtained small arms ammo from the older men. PW estimates the average ammo supply for his entire company was 30 rds per man. A few of the replacements received one RG-42 offensive hand grenades or F-1 defensive hand grenade, also from the older men. The entire 15th Regt was in reserve at this time, undergoing reorganization.
27 2100 Aug: 15th Regt, with only light artillery support, launched an attack towards HAMAN. 1st Bn advanced to a point 4 km E of YUDONG, where it was brought to a halt owing to effective UN artillery fire. The ensuing battle proved very costly for the 1st Bn. PW’s company was totally disorganized.
6 Sep 50: PW and two other S. Koreans lost all contact with company. PW picked up a UN Safe Conduct Pass which helped him make up his mind to surrender to the UN forces.
10 Sep 50: PW and his companions walked up to a US rear echelon unit and surrendered themselves.


Strength:
2nd Co, 1st Bn, 15th Regt as of 27 Aug 50 approx 100. PW estimates Co suffered 20% casualties the last operation.

Weapons:
2nd Co, 1st Bn, 15th Regt as of 27 Aug 50: 1 x 82mm. M1937 mortar (believed only attached to Co), 1 x MAXIM HMG, 4 x DP LMG, 12 x SMG’s 1 x RPG-43 heat hand grenade per squad. Remainder armed with either Russian rifles or Jap M99 rifles.

Intentions:
Immediate objective of 15th Regt - HAMAN.

4. GENERAL:
o/a 23 Jul 50 PW observed an estimated 300 US PsW at SUWON. PWs were being transported by trucks to SEOUL (hearsay). Also heard from residents of SUWON that at least 1,500 US PWs passed through SUWON early Jul 50.
