3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
| 27 Jul 50: | PW conscripted into NKPA P'YONGYANG (平壤). 300 conscripts (mostly farmers ages 16 - 37, average age 25) designated 1st Bn. Left P'YONGYANG, unarmed, same day by rail. Conscripts notified they would be replacements for NKPA units in South Korea. |
| 27-30 Jul: | 1st Bn conscripts instructed in use of M1891/30 rifle aboard train enroute south. |
| 31 Jul 50: | 1st Bn arrived at SEOUL. |
| 3 Aug 50: | 1st Bn left SEOUL on foot. |
| 11 Aug 50: | 1st Bn arrived at T'AEJON over highway through SUWON (水原) CH'ONAN (天安). |
| 13 Aug 50: | 1st Bn left T'AEJON on foot. |
| 150500 K Aug: | 1st Bn arrived at KUMCH’ON (金泉) over T'AEJON-KUMCH’ON highway. Immediately subjected to US air interdiction. 20 KIA, 5 WIA in 1st Bn at KUMCH’ON as result of a 2 hour strafing. No bombs were dropped. |
| 18 Aug 50: | 1st Bn assigned to 3rd Div units. 1st Bn left KUMCH’ON on foot, in southeasterly direction. 12 wounded and/or sick troops, including PW, 1st Bn, remained behind in field hospital located in KUMCH’ON. |
| 21 Aug 50: | PW and 11 troops, recovered, assigned to 1st Bn, 9th Inf Regt, 3rd Div, left KUMCH’ON on foot for 3rd Div area in southeasterly direction. |
| 8 Sep 50: | PW and 11 troops, still unarmed but wearing NKPA uniforms, arrived at NAKTONG River (洛東). Crossed river without incident same night at point north of WAEGWAN (倭館). River 5 feet at deepest point of crossing. Continued march in southeasterly direction. |
| 132000 K Sep: | PW and 11 troops arrived 9th Regt positions in wooded mountain immediately most of WAEGWAN-TAEGU highway 14 km Northwest of TAEGU. In wooded mountain PW learned from troops in unit 9th Regt strength reduced to 500 by US-ROK Army arty-mortar shelling and US air attack. As result of reduced strength and no replacements, 9th Inf Regt redesignated 3rd Bn. Troops told 3rd Bn would join another 3rd Div Regt, location unknown. |

Weapons and Personnel (14 Sep 50):
9th Inf Regt - strength 500.
3rd Bn, ? Regt - strength 500. Remarks: Only 30% armed with used M1891/30 and used US Army M-1 carbines and rifles, 20-30 rds each. Remaining unarmed troops instructed to pick up weapons and ammunition from unit casualties. Officers armed with pistols, sqd ldr with submachine guns.

4. GENERAL:Medical:
Troops, whenever troubled by constipation, were given 3 tablets (1 taken with each meal) which usually cleared up the constipation, Field hospital in KUMCH’ON was staffed with 1 NKPA medical officer and 4 nurses. Approximately 60 wounded and 40 sick (dysentery, malaria) patients ware confined here. Bandages on wounded were replaced once every two or three days and treated at same time. PW believes there were surgical facilities at this hospital. Hospital was located in dugouts covered over with tree branches and grass.
