3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
PW left home because of hardship for KILlN (吉林), Manchuria in May 49. PW joined the Chinese Army, known as Public Peace Corps (保案因) which had 1 company of 120 Koreans. The Korean Co was known as the Korean Independent Regt with no numerical designation. PW was inducted into the army on 17 May 49. PW received 2 weeks of basic training then was ordered to CHANG CHI ESLANG (張芝鄉) for 11 months of duty. In Apr 50, PW’s Korean unit of 120 men was ordered by their commander who was a Chinese Capt to pack up because they were leaving. The Chinese Cap remained behind and the Korean troops were under the command of the 1st Plt Ldr, CHANG, Yong Sun (張永順). PW didn’t know his destination until the unit reached WONSAN by train in Apr 50. PW was then assigned to the 7th Div in WONSAN (元山) where he received further training. Sometime in Jun 50, PW was told that the whole 7th Div was going on maneuvers. PW’s Div left WONSAN in early Jun 50 by train and arrived at SIP’ORI (十五里) where the Div was unloaded, then marched southward into the mountains. On 24 Jun 50, PW noticed that the whole Div was preparing for war instead of a simple maneuver. On 25 Jun 50, the 7th Div crossed the 38° Parallel and fought its way down to WONJU (原州). PW's Bn consisted of 664 men. From WONJU, 7th Div went through CHECH’ON (堤川), TANYANG (丹陽) YONGJU (榮州), and ANDONG (安東). About 8 km N of ANDONG, PW’s Bn received 94 new replacements from WONSAN. The 7th Div then departed on foot for UISONG (義城) then south to YONGCH’ON (永川) where it arrived o/a 1 Sep 50. PW was sent back to ANDONG to get signal supplies. At ANDONG, PW located the 7th Div Hqs just 3 km due south from the top of P’IHAK SAN (飛鶴山). When PW found his Bn out of a total of 500 men who had made up the 3rd Bn only 80 men were left.
