FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0806) 18 September 1950

2. ASSESSMENT:
Average intelligence, very cooperative but information was limited. Further interrogation is not recommended.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
9 Jul 50: Inducted at HAEJU (海州). 3rd Bn Hq was located approx 1 km NW of HAEJU Station. High school was used for barracks and training. Strength of 3rd Bn was 560 men. Only Bn CO, Co COs, Plt ldrs, Sqd ldr were Regular Army (50) and approx 510 men were conscripts. The 500 men were divided into three (3) rifle Cos and a HMG Co. PW and 150 men were assigned to the 1st Co and received about l week basic training. During this training 450 men (3 companies) fired 3 rounds with M1891/30 rifles. 60 men assigned to HMG Co.
28 Jul 50: 450 men received M1891/30 rifles and 100 rounds per rifle. HMG Co received unknown number of MAXIM HMG M1910.
29 Jul 50: 3rd Bn (560 men) departed by train. 1 Aug 50 arrived SUSAEK (水色).
1 Aug 50: Departed SUSAEK via SUWON, CH’ONAN (marched), T’AEJON arrived CHINJU on 15 Aug 50. After 15 Aug 50 1st Co was called 7th Co. Reason for redesignation unknown.
16 Aug 50: 7th Co (approx 150 men) departed CHINJU - marched - arrived SAMCH'ONP'O (三千浦) 19 Aug 50.
22 Aug 50: Departed SAMCH'ONP'O marched via KOSONG (固城) and arrived (1141-1381) on 10 Sep 50. 7th Co, 8th Co and 9th Co assembled at (1141-1381). HMG Co was not observed. Strength of 7th Co was 150 men. 3rd Bn Hq was located 1141-1381.
11 Sep 50: 8th and 9th Cos not seen. After 13 Sep 50, 3rd Bn Hq retreated, destination unknown. After 3 days of aircraft bombardment and strafing, Bn CO retreated and about 15 men tried to follow him. Bn CO and 3 officers pointed pistols at the 15 men and the CO said, “If you follow me I will shoot you all.” The 15 men remained in their positions.
151500 Sep 50: About 10 US soldiers advanced to PW’s position. PW and 14 men surrendered.

Personalities:
3rd Plt ldr: KIM Pyong Hak (金炳l學) (김병학), Jr Lt. age 23. 10 Sep 50, the 7th Co CO and KIM Pyong Hak ran away from the company at (1141-1381). Both were wounded.

Artillery:
PW observed 5 x 45mm M1942 AT guns hauled by 2 x ZIS-151 and 3 x GAZ-51 on 15 Aug 50 at CHINJU.

Supplies:
No food was delivered after HAEJU 29 Jul 50. Ammunition last received at HAEJU 28 Jul 50.

Enemy Intentions:
Objective of 3rd Bn was MASAN.

Leaflets:
On 12 Sep 50, PW saw some leaflets and wanted to surrender. 13 Sep 50 right after Bn CO and 3 officers retreated, 15 men went to village to try to surrender. They were caught by the sqd ldr and brought back to their positions. PW and 14 men were kicked by sqd ldr and told “If any of you men try to run away you all will be shot.”

Communications:
Between Regt and Bn and between Bn and Co communication was by runner. 2 or 3 men were used as runners. Weapon which most N Koreans feared was aircraft bombardment and strafing and mortar fire.
