2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and information seems fairly reliable. PW had little tactical information because he was a replacement. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
19 Jul 50: PW was inducted at P'YONGYANG (平壤). About 180 men including PW received 12 days basic training. Various subjects were taught by charts and books. The 180 men were attached to the National Defence Independent Mixed Brigade.
8 Aug 50: The 180 men departed P'YONGYANG by train.
23 Aug 50: The 180 men reached PUNGGI (豐基) via SEOUL, WONJU (原州) and TANYANG (丹陽). They rode on train all the way from P'YONGYANG to PUNGGI and from PUNGGI, on trucks.
o/a 29 Aug 50: PW and 120 men reached approx 20 km S of ANDONG (安東). The other 60 men were delayed. The 120 men marched from here.
o/a 5 Sep 50: PW and about 80 others reached CHACH'ON DONG (慈川洞) via KUSAN DONG (九山洞). Rest of the 40 men were assigned to various units on the way from UISONG (義城). The 80 men including PW were formed into the 4th Co, 3rd Bn, 73rd Independent Regt.
o/a 7 Sep 50: The 3rd Bn was attacked by the ROK troops.
10 Sep 50: The 3rd Bn retreated to 2 km N of CHACH'ON DONG.
13 Sep 50: PW deserted his unit at night.
14 Sep 50: PW surrendered to ROK troops 5 km SE of CHACH'ON DONG.

3rd Bn, 73rd Ind Regt - 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Rifle Cos. Other supporting units unknown.
4th Rifle Co - 80 men. No HMG’s. 4 x LMG’s. 6 SMG’s. Rifleman armed with M1938 carbines.

Last known composition of unit (13 Sep 50):
PW estimated that approx 160 men remained in the 3rd Bn, 73rd Ind Regt. PW stated that about 100 soldiers (without weapons) came to the 3rd Bn, 73rd Regt 13 Sep 50. Those 100 men were all recent conscripts.

Intentions:
PW heard from fellow soldiers that the objective of 73rd Regt was YONGCH’ON (永川).

Armor:
PW observed 5 x T-34/85 tanks heading south approx 12 km N of UISONG (義城) o/a 3 Sep 50.

Artillery:
There were 3 x 57mm AT guns and a 45mm AT gun located 2 km N of CHACH’ON DONG 13 Sep 50.

Morale and Propaganda:
The troops wore all inexperienced and morale was very low. Many wanted to surrender, but could not because the officers were behind them with SMG's. PW stated that many people in PW's village listened to the S Korean radio broadcasts before this war started. Many young people in PW's village had faith in the S Korean government, but they were all conscripted into the NKPA.

4. GENERAL:
One N Korean won is worth 8 ROK won. PW saw Red Cross insignia on N Korean hospital vehicles.
