Cooperative, reliability limited by ignorance. PW escaped from NKPA at HYOPCH’ON (陜川). Made way some 12 miles to NAKTONG River which he crossed. Slept in deserted house and heard voices of American troops so he surrendered. No further interrogation recommended.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
Taken from home in HWANGHAEDO on 18 Aug 50 by truck to SINMAK (新幕) then by RR to SEOUL. Rejected by army after physical examination. One of about 200 taken as bearers. Carried ammo (small arms) from SEOUL by night via T’AEJON (大田), KOCH'ANG (居昌) to HYOPCH’ON. About 8 Sep 50 PW states 200 porters, having finished mission were told they could not return home while soldiers were fighting for their country. Sqd (15) of NK soldiers began shooting porters with rifles. Others broke and fled in all directions. Many were killed. PW hid in rice field. Escaped at night, to NAKDONG River where surrender occurred.
PW unit of 200 bearers followed force of about 3,000 men but is ignorant of organization. One guard to each 6 men. PW knows nothing of fate of any other bearer. Most killed. Each bearer carried two cases of ammunition.
Morale:
All bearers desired to escape. No intercourse with NKPA enlisted men. Warned they would be killed if they surrendered. Bearers regarded this as false. No fear of capture. Bearers given handful of uncooked wheat twice each day.
