FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS - LDI - 0117) 18 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: YANG Cheng Shing (Chinese)
AGE: 46

UNIT: 40th Army, 120th Div, 359th Regt, 1st Bn.
EDUCATION: Primary School (4 months).
PLACE OF CAPTURE: Vicinity WONNAM DONG (YE240065)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was in good physical condition. PW was below average intelligence. During course of interrogation gave 3 different versions to an obvious question. Information obtained considered doubtful. Held rank of Private First Class in Nationalist Army. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was drafted into the Chinese Nationalist Army at TSUKOUISU Jan 41. Fought against Japanese troops (5 battles). Captured by elements of CCF at WOOYUENPU 18 Aug 46 (Date & month according to Chinese callender). Forced into CCF and assigned to 8th Route Army, 9th Div, 26th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, as rifleman. Stationed at PEIPING from Nov 47 to Jan 49. During this period 7th, 8th and 9th Divisions engaged in performing normal duties. Departed PEIPING by foot in Jan 49 and arrived HANKOW 46 days later. At HANKOW 7th, 8th and 9th Divisions engaged in routine training. Departed HANKOM Apr 49 and arrived CHANGSA 26 days later. Engaged in combat training for approx 2 months. Departed CHANGSA on or about Aug 49 and arrived LAHSE. Received 2 months amphibious training. Departed LAHSE for HAINAN Island and fought against Nationalist Army for aporox 1 week. Departed HAINAN Island and arrived HENSAN in Dec 49. Stationed here for approx 1 month. During this period 9th Division was redesignated the 120th Div, and attached to 40th Army. Disposition of 7th and 8th Divisions unknown. 40th Army arrived ANTUNG late July 50, via the following route: KWANGCHCW, HANKOW, HOLAN or MUKDEN. In ANTUNG for approx 2 months and engaged in field training. No other CCF units observed during stay in ANTUNG. 40th Army crossed the YALU River into NORTH KOREA late Oct 50 (date unk). Marched for 7 nights to unknown location, Encountered 1 US tank enroute. Destroyed same. Suffered 40 casualties during engagement. Rested for 2 days vicinity hill. Resumed march at night to unknown destination. On enroute received arty barrage causing his unit to detour on small mountain path. At this time PW lost contact with his unit.

b. PW’s Unit or Group:
Composition of 40th Army unknown. 120th Div composed of 358th, 359th and 360th Regts. Strength of 359th Regt: 2400 men. 3 Bns in each Regt. Each Bn composed of 800 men. Each Bn composed of 3 Inf Co’s, MG Co, and Service Co (composed of approx 40 men). Inf Co composed of approx 180 men. MG Co 200-210 men. MG Co also called heavy weapons Co. 9 × 50mm mortars, 29 LMG and 3 HMG in each Bn. Each Inf Co equipped with 3 × 50mm mortars, 9 LMGs. HMG Co has 3 HMGs and 4 × 105mm arty guns. All other troops armed with rifles. Heavy weapons horse drawn. No knowledge of tac tics employed by CCF. Location of 358th and 360th Regt unknown.

c. Ammo and Food:
Heard that ammunition being hauled from arsenals located in MUKDEN and HANKOW. Present food and ammo supply sufficient.

d. Morale:
Morale of CCF troops fair to good at time PW lost contact with his unit.

4. GENERAL:
a. US PW’S: PW heard that approx 4 US PW’s captured by his unit approx 15 days ago. No knowledge of dismantling of Hydro-electric equipment in NORTH KOREA.
