PW was very cooperative, but due to his short military service information contained hereon limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.
3. TO/E, DISPOSITION:A. Own Unit:
PW was inducted 20 Aug 50 at SUNCHON (YD5367) and assigned to the 733rd Ind Inf Bn, 2nd Co. He received 10 days of basic infantry training at SUKCHON (YD1665) with 300 men. Upon completion, PW and the entire 733rd Ind Inf Bn departed on foot and arrived at ANJU (YD1980) 5 Sep 50. Here PW was used as a laborer hauling firewood and food supplies. 16 Sep 50 PW and to others were on a truck loaded with firewood from YONGBYON (YE4O01). At PAKCH’ON (YE2200) the truck they were riding capsized. Since they couldn’t get the truck into operation again they abandoned the truck and deserted. PW took to the mountain trails and arrived at his home in SUNGHWA RI 30 Sep 50, however, instead of staving with his family, he hid himself on SUNGA SAN (BU4758) until 19 Oct 50, because of fear of the communist officials, who were still in SUNGHWA RI. After they left, PW returned to his home and worked on his fathers farm until 17 Nov 50 when he was captured.
Prior to PW’s desertion, the 733rd Ind Inf Bn was composed of three Inf Companies. Each company had approx 80 men. Each company was composed of three platoons.
In the PW’s 1st Co, the troops were armed with 23-M1891/30 rifles with 50 rds of ammo each, and 3 - SMGs with 71 rds of ammo per gun. They also had two pistols, and grenades.
PW stated that food supply was received at the ANJU Warehouses. However, it was not known where the warehouses received their food. The food supply was not considered sufficient for the troops of the 733rd Bn. The daily requirement was 800 grams each, but the PW received only 500 grams.
In PW’s Bn, there were two Russian trucks, which were reconditioned and were in fair running condition. Whereabouts of the fuel supply for the trucks was unknown.
The mission of the 733rd Ind Inf Bn was unknown, however, PW heard from follow soldiers that units would move to YONGBYON area (16 Sep).
4. MISCELLANEOUS:PW stated that the morale of the troops of his unit was low because they were all conscripted and did not have the will to fight.
The majority of the troops, who had read the UN leaflets, had faith in the statements written on the leaflets and intended to surrender at the first opportunity.
