FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0139) 6 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: KIM, Tuk Yong (金得龍)
AGE: 20

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but due to his short service and poor memory his information was vague and limited. He is not recommended for further interrogation.

3. OWN ORGANIZATION:
PW was inducted 15 May 50 and received one month basic training at HWANGJU, NORTH KOREA, where he was assigned to the 7th Div, 1st Regt, 2nd Bn, Co (unk).
On 23 Jun 50 his Co with the 7th Div departed HWANGJU and arrived at PAEKCHON o/a 28 Jun 50. On the following day they left and passed through the following places: SEOUL, SUWON, CHONAN, and arrived at CHOCHIWON where he was assigned to the 3rd Co, 2nd Bn, 1st Regt. The Bn was ordered to report to WANDO (BP8704) and was separated from the Div. It arrived at TALTO (BP8209) o/a 10 Aug and was stationed there for three days, performing coastal guard duty. Orders were received o/a 13 Aug to report to HYOPCHON. Arrived HYOPCHON o/a 23 Sep. Departed the following day, passing through the following places: YONGDONG, SANGJU, HAMCHANG and PAEKHWA SAN (DR1862). The Bn was engaged by enemy forces respectively in vic SANGJU, HAMCHANG and PAEKHWA SAN on unknown dates. During this time 4 men were killed, 2 were wounded and 3 men were captured by the enemy forces. Upon arriving at PAEKHWA SAN on 24 Oct PW deserted his Bn and surrendered 25 Oct.

4. PRESENT ENEMY GROUP:
PW’s Bn with about 400 men was located at PAEKHWA SAN (DR1862) on 23 Oct 50. Bn possessed the following types and number of weapons: 1 HMG, 15 LMGs, about 325 Russ rifles. Two hand grenades to each man and about 70 rds per man.
PW observed about 400 men in a small village approx 4 kms S of PAEKHWA SAN on 23 Oct 50. These men were armed with SMGS and Russ rifles. He observed about 12 LMGs with 3 drum magazines each and about 70 rds ammo per man.

5. PRESENT ENEMY MISSION AND/OR INTENTION:
Troops of the 2nd Bn of about 400 men were told by the Bn CO that their present objective was to retreat to YANGYANG (DT6714) and wait for further orders.

6. PRESENT ENEMY SUPPLY & EQUIPMENT:
Food was begged from the villagers during retreat.

7. PRESENT ENEMY METHODS:
Villagers were forced to cooperate with the NK troops in indicating escape routes. Troop movement was conducted mostly at night. Retreat through mountain trails was done in single file due to the narrow trails. Patrols scouted trails ahead of them.

8. PERSONALITIES:

Asst Bn CO KAN, Chan Kyu (康張九) Major, age 38.
Co CO KIM, Hak Chul (金学悊) Capt, age 28.
Plat Ldr KIM, Hak Kun (金学根) Jr Lt, age 25.

9. MORALE & PROPAGANDA:
Morale among the troops was high until their retreat. Later it dropped considerably due to lack of fighting spirit and shortage of food.
PW picked up a US Safe Conduct leaflet 25 Oct 50 while intending to surrender. He surrendered willingly after reading the leaflet.
