2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative, but lack detailed information. He stated that CCF personnel who were communist party members were more informed than noncommunist party members.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
Jun 1938 - Volunteered into “Local Defense Forces” (自衛隊) at YEE YAO HSIEN (phonetic 舟谷要 ), CHEKIANG Province, CHINA. Trained for 1 year.
Aug 1943 - Transferred to the 54th Army, 200th Div, 288th Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co at LUNAN (路南), CHINA. The 54th Army was renamed “New 5th Army” (新五軍) about 6 days after PW arrived at LUNAN. The Remained here for about 2 years.
Sep 1945 - Entire New 5th Army moved to MUKDEN, MANCHURIA.
Nov 1947 - Entire New. 5th Army returned to LUNAN, CHINA and fought with CCF in that region for about 1 year.
Dec 1948 - Captured by CCF together with 3,000 to 4,000 troops of the New 5th Army at LUNAN, CHINA. PW was assigned to CCF 20th Army, 60th Div, 179th Regt, 2nd Bn, 5th Co.
Feb 1949 - 20th Army moved to CHIANGSU (江蘇省) Province, CHINA.
May 1949 - 20th Army departed KIANGSU Province and arrived at NANKING, CHINA. Here the 20th Army fought with Chinese Nationalist Forces.
Jun 1949 - 20th Army returned to SHANGHAI. Here they fought against Chinese Nationalist Forces for about 2 weeks.
o/a 6 Nov 50 - 179th Regt departed SHANGHAI by train. PW saw other elemonts of the 20th Army depart SHANGHAI prior to the 179th Regt and he believed that the 179th Regt was the last unit of the 20th Army to depart SHANGHAI.
11 Nov 50 - 179th Regt arrived at ANTUNG (安東) and no other CCF units were observed. While eating supper here PW heard from his company political officer that the other units of the 20th Amy had already entered KOREA and that the 89th Div of the 30th Army was in the 20th Army now. Soon after finishing supper the 179th Regt crossed the Yalu Rivor into KOREA.
15 Nov 50 - Regt arrived at a mountain (place name unk) after marching eastward from SINUIJU for 5 nights. The Regt rested at this mountain for 3 days and continued its march eastward. After 2 days of walking PW and 2 others deserted and stayed at a lone Korean home for about 5 days.
25 Nov 50 - At the Korean home PW and the other 2 men were given a surrender leaflet and the men decided to surrender. They realized that the UN had all the modern weapons and the CCF would have no chance against them. They believed that it was foolish for them to fight a war for the Koreans and risk their lives. On this day they heard firing of guns and realizing that they were UN troops nearby they sought the UN troops and surrendered with the one surrender leaflet.

5. ORGANIZATION: (Obs - Apr 50)
The CCF consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Field Armies, The 3rd Field Army consisted of the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Army Groups. The 9th Army Group consistcd of the 20th, 27th, 26th and 33rd Armies.
The 20th Army consisted of the 58th, 59th, 60th and 89th Divs. There were approx 50,000 men in the 20th Army.
The 60th Div consisted of the 178th, 179th, 188th and an Arty Regt. There were approx 10,000 men in the 60th Div. The 179th Regt consisted of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Inf Bns. There were approx 2,000 men in the Regt.
The 2nd Inf Bn consisted of the 4th, 5th, 6th Cos and a HMG and mortar Co. There were approx 500 men in this Bn. The 5th Co consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Inf Plats and a heavy weapons Plat. The 3rd Plat consisted of the 7th, 8th and 9th Sqds. PW heard the above information at a lecture which was conducted at a SHANGHAI theater in Apr 50.

The men were armed with rifles, with approx 150 rds of ammo and 2 to 4 hand grenades. Many of the rifles and ammunition were captured from the CNA.

8. GENERAL:
The political affairs officers appoared to have more authority than regular lino officers and there were frequent quarrels between these officers.
PW surmised that about 70% of the Manchurian people favored the CCF troops as land was divided among them, but 30% who were the richer class of peoplo favored the CNA.
PW believed that most of the CCF troops in KOREA wore ex-CNA soldiers and for this reason were sent to fight the UN troops in KOREA.
