FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0023) 12 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and tried to answer all questions asked although unable to give detailed information due to the short period PW spent in the Army. Information given is considered reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. ORGANIZATION, STRENGTH AND DISPOSITION:
A. Own Unit
23 Sep 50 PW joined the Chinese Communist Force at CHOLRYONG, MANCHURIA. Immediately after entering the Army, PW was ordered to attend Chinese lectures mostly pertaining to military terms. PW attended the classes for 20 days. After finishing the class PW was assigned to 334th Regt in CHOLRYONG, MANCHURIA as an interpreter and at the same time his title was assistant plat ldr of the reconnaissance section of the 334th Regt.
23 Oct 50 the 112th and 113th Divs left MUKDEN with the strength of 12,000 men per Div. PW stated that both Divs left CHOLRYONG by train to KANGGYE.
24 Oct 50 both Divs crossed the border at MANPO. (Central part of the North Korean Border).
26 Oct 50 both Divs arrived in KANGGYE, On the same day both Divs left for KAECHON area (4 miles north of KAECHON).
8 Nov 50 the 112th and 113 th Divs arrived in the vicinity of KAECHON area (Name of the place unknown). PW stated that it was a mountain area, At this point all regts of both Divs were deployed; therefore PW has no knowledge of whereabouts of the 335th, 336th of the 112th Div and 337th, 338th and 339th Regts of the 113th Div.
9 Nov 50 the 334th Regt of the 112th Div established its headquarters in SANGYANJI (YE5411).
10 Nov 50 PW and 15 others were dispatched from reconnaissance section to reconnoiter the road condition and UN Forces situation in YONG TAE GHANG (5 miles NE of KACCHON) area. About 1400 hrs PW’s unit encountered ROK unit patrol and scattered. PW wounded in the left leg and was captured. PW stated that 334th Regt of the 112th Div is also known as TUNG AN PU 1st Div, 34th Regt.

B. Other Units
PW stated that on 10 Oct 50 prior to the departure of both Divs from MUKDEN, he heard from the officers of the 38th Army that all units of the 4th Field Army will cross the border into KOREA.
PW stated that 4th Field Army Headquarters was located in MUKDEN. The 4th Field Army consisted of 38th Army, 39th Army and the 40th Army. Each Army consisted of 3 Divs with the strength of 12,000 men per Div.
PW stated that the 337th and the 338th Regts of the 113th Div engaged in battle with the UN Force in the vicinity of KAECHON and was repulsed. PW stated that the 113th Div retreated to the rear and 335th and the 336th Regts of the 112th Div replaced the 337th and the 338th Regt sector. 334th Regt was the reserve unit for the 112th Div sector.

4. MISSION:
PW stated that the present mission (as of 10 Nov 50) for the 112th Div and the 113th Div is to occupy KAECHON.

5. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT:
WEAPONS:
The 334th Regt has mountain artillery (size unk) (able to be carried by horse), mortars (size unk), HMG’s, LMG’s, US carbines and former Japanese rifles. PW has no knowledge of the number of weapons in the Regt.

AMMO:
The ammunition is insufficient. Each rifleman carries l60 rounds of ammo.

FOOD SUPPLY:
Food is insufficient. Troops are fed twice daily but the amount is not enough.

CLOTHING:
All troops were issued a set of winter clothing prior to crossing the border into KOHEA.

6. REPLACEMENT OF PERSONNEL AND MATERIEL:
PW has no knowledge of any replacement of personnel or materiel.

7. MISCELLANEOUS:
A. Personalities
LIN Piao, Gen, 4th Field Army Comdr. (Hqs in MUKDEN).
PW stated all officers are referred to by the number given. Number 35 334th Regt’l Comdr.

B. Enemy Tactics
9 Nov 50 in SANGYANJU (YE5411) where 334th Regt’l Hqs was located, PW had an opportunity to listen in for a short time when the 334th Regt Comdr was discussing the future operation tactics with the Bn Comdr of the 334th Regt.
The following is what PW heard: All western sector of 112th Div front will continue to maintain contact with the UN force and attempt to draw in the UN force into the mountain area. This plan is employed due to the fact that on the flat terrain, the UN force has greater fire superiority and in the mountain area the fire power is limited.
PW stated that he has no knowledge of any North Korean units fighting on the front line. All North Korean units were relieved by CCF units.
26 Oct 50 PW heard from North Korean personnel that airfield is under construction at KANGGYE. Also PW heard from the North Korean Army personnel that all North Korean Army stragglers were assembling in MANPOJIN trying to reorganize.
Across the border from MANPOJIN, PW stated that there is an anti-aircraft gun position. PW heard this from the RR station master near MANPOJIN RR station. (exact location undetermined).

8. MORALE:
The morale among CCF units is low because food and ammo are insufficient. Majority of the troops feel that they are fighting a losing battle against UN forces.

9. PROPAGANDA:
All unit comdrs of the CCF units stressed to the troops that they will win this war. In order to defeat the enemy (UN Forces), all troops must do their utmost to carry out their daily duties.
