2. INTERROGATOR‘S ASSESSMENT:
PW was very talkative and seems sincere. Information seems very reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF UNITS:
1st Division (Code: 115) was composed of 3 Rifle Regiments, a Tank Unit, Signal Bn, Engineer Bn, AT Bn, 112th HMG Unit (Code: 163), and one (1) SP Gun Battalion.

4. LOCATION AND UNIT ACTIVITIES:
Approximately 2,000 troops of the 1st Division escaped from South KOREA and arrived at KANGGYE (BA 9738) 25 Oct 50. The 1st Division was heading toward MANP’OJIN from KANGGYE 25 Oct 50.
PW heard that a defense line will be established near MANP’OJIN and that newly conscripted troops will be trained in MANCHURIA. PW heard that the 13th and 15th Divisions arrived in KANGGYE o/a 25 Oct 50. PW observed approximately 200 to 400 troops with each group which were pointed out to be parts of the 13th and 15th Division. PW was at Regimental Headquarters of 3rd Division, located on a mountain in PUK MYON (BV 4993) o/a 30 Oct 50. PW observed CCF troops at CHONGCHON (BA 8309), PUNG MYON, TOWON MYON (YE 5360), and SONG MYON (YE 4269) during the period 30 Oct 50 to 10 Nov 50.
A large number of CCF troops were observed combing the mountains near KOJANG (YE 4997) during Nov 50, looking for isolated South Korean troops.
Approximately 3,000 CCF troops were observed o/a 23 Oct 50, marching south from KANGGYE.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the NKA at P’YONGYANG on 4 May 49 and was assigned as a clerk to the newly organized 112th HMG Unit, 1st Division located in SARIWON (YC 4065) on 7 May 49.
During Oct 49, the 112th HMG Unit, 1st Division moved to NAMCHONJOM (BT 7345).
1st Division departed NAMCHONJOM on 22 Jun 50; crossed the 38th Parallel into South KOREA on 25 Jul 50. The 1st Division travelled through SEOUL, CHUNGJU, HAMCHANG, SANGJU, to KUNWI, arriving at KUNWI o/a 10 Sep 50.
The 1st Division retreated from KUNWI o/a 27 Sep 50 and passed through MUNGYENG, TANYANG, CHECH’ON, WONJU, INJE (DT 2713), KUMHWA (CT 6538), POKKYE RI (CT 4855), ICHON MYON (CT 2761), SUAN (BT 7186), KOKSAN (BT 9795), YANGDOK (BU 9644), MAENGSAN (BU 8692), TOKCH’ON (BV 6905), KUJANG (BV 4517), HUICHON (BV 6849), to KANGGYE (BA 9737), arriving at KANGGYE 25 Oct 50.
PW deserted his unit while en route to MANP’OJIN from KANGGYE 25 Oct 50 and wandered through the mountains until 130800 Ⅰ Nov 50, when he surrendered at ORI MYON (YE 4713).

6. PERSONALITIES:

Assumed command of the division while retreating from South KOREA o/a 15 Oct 50. Received citation for bringing 6,000 troops of the 1st Division to KANGGYE.

Formerly Commanding General of 1st Division. Assigned as Chief of Staff Ⅱ Corps during Sep 50.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
While retreating from South KOREA, the 1st Division forced all stragglers of other units and all civilians under 45 years old to join the 1st Division. Approximately 4,000 troops joined the 1st Division in this manner.

8. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW observed approximately 300 trucks (all new and of same make) heading south from KANGGYE (BA 9737) o/a 22 Oct 50. PW heard that these were CCF trucks loaded with ammo and food. PW heard that the trucks were going to HUICHON (BV 6849).. (Interrogator’s Note: PW’s unit stopped for 12 hours for the trucks to pass.)

9. ARMOR & ARTILLERY:
PW observed approximately 7 T-34/85 Tanks heading north from KUJANG (BV 4517) o/a 20 Oct 50. On or about 23 Oct 50, PW observed approximately 20 artillery pieces of a CCF unit, 12 km north of CHONCH’ON (BA 8709). Each artillery piece was drawn by 6 horses.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was apprehended by CCF troops on three different occasions and was interrogated three times at PUK MYON (BV 4893), TOWON MYON (YE 5260), and SONG MYON (YE 4269) during the period from 30 Oct 50 to 10 Nov 50. Interrogations were conducted in Japanese, Three to four interrogators conducted each interrogation. PW was investigated because he was suspected of being a South Korean soldier.
