1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
26 Sep 50 - Conscripted into 4th Bn at SUNGHO-RI (勝湖里). There were 6 Bns at SUNGHO-RI which were activated 22 Sep 50 and were formed from released prisoners. Each battalion had a strength 460. PW heard that there were 4 other similar battalions organized at WONSAN.
27 Sep 50 - These Bns at SUNGHO-RI were the 819th, 820th, 821st, 822nd, 823rd, and 824th Independent Infantry Battalions respectively and they constituted the 40th Brigade. 40th Brigade was heard to be under the direct command of “Defense Headquarters.” PW was assigned to the 822nd Bn as Sgt Major for the 3rd Co and received approximately a week of administrative training with other Sgt Majors from the other battalions. The men of the 40th Brig were engaged in infantry training with wooden rifles.
11 Oct 50 - Hearing artillery fire in the distance the Battalion commander decided to move from SUNGHO-RI. PW’s Battalion departed SUNGHO-NI about 1900 and arrived at SAMSIN-coal mine (三神炭鉱) which is located approximately 8 km S of PYONGYANG. PW did not know where the other battalions went.
12 Oct 50 - About 1300 the 822nd Bn departed SAMSIN coal mine for KANGGYE (江界). However, PW and another man were left behind and instructed to conceal the rations. After their battalion departed PW and the other man deserted. PW intended to go to NUNG-NI (陵 里) where his wife was,
4 Nov 50 - PW obtained a safe conduct pass from a farmer at SUAN (遂安) and decided to surrender. However, he still feared that he might be killed, if captured by UN forces.
21 Nov 50 - PW surrendered to a ROK police station at SONG-NI (松里).

4. PERSONALITIES:
HO Chae Yong (許在龍) (허재룡), about 32, Lt Col, 822nd Ind Inf Bn Commander.
IM Yong Gak (林龍赫) (림용각), about 27, Sr Lt, 3rd Co Commander.
PAK Hwa Sun (朴化淳) (박화순), about 36, Lt, 3rd Co Cultural officer.

5. ORGANIZATION:
The 40th Brigade was of the 819th, 820th, 821st, 822nd, 823rd, and 824th Independent Infantry Battalions. PW heard that there were four other independent infantry battalion in the 40th Brig which were probably the 825th, 826th, 827th, and 828th Independent Infantry Battalions. These 4 battalions were rumored to have been organized at WONSAN during the latter part of Sep 50.
Each independent infantry battalion composed of 4 companies. Each company had about 120 men and about 6 officers.
There were no weapons and only the battalion commander had a pistol. Many of the men did not have a complete uniform.
The battalion commanders were Lt Cols. The battalion commander was assisted by 3 majors who were the cultural officer, military affairs officer and C of S, and 2 captains who were the propaganda officer and the rear area section chief.
