FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0150) 8 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very Cooperative and willingly gave information. Information contained herein is considered fairly reliable, despite his short military service and rank. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. OWN ORGANIZATION:
PW inducted 11 Jul 50 at P’YONGYANG. Sent to the 945th Marine Brigade a newly organized unit in Jul at WONSAN. Received 18 days of basic infantry training and after completion on 28 Jul PW and the entire 4th Bn (600 men) departed WONSAN by rail and arrived at SEOUL on 30 Jul. Composition of the other units of the 945th Marine Brigade was unknown since the unit was scattered in WONSAN. From SEOUL the 4th Bn travelled by foot and the following route was taken: SUWON, CHOCHIWON, TAEJON, CHONJU, NAMWON, KURYE, SUNCHON and arriving at YOSU 30 aug 50. Immediately upon arrival the 4th Bn was redesignated 244th Marine Brigade, reason unknown. After arriving the Bn was split into companies to guard the shores from enemy landings. Dispsition of other companies unknown, but PW’s Co was assigned to the YOSU airfield. 27 Sep 50 they were ordered to move. Near CHIRI SAN, they joined vith the 1st, 2nd 45mm and HMG Cos of the fourth Bn. The Bn marched together to CHIRI SAN and arrived 30 Sep. After arrival the En was split up due to the shortage of food. Just before they separated the Bn Comdr told them that they were to assemble at CHORWON via the TAEBAEK Mt range. 28 Oct PW and two others deserted and surrendered to ROK troops. Reasons given for surrender: that it is better to be a prisoner than to stay out in the mountains with insufficient food and he was told by S Koreans that treatment of prisoners was very good.

4. PRESENT ENEMY GROUP:
PW stated that the 3rd Co was presently in SONGNI SAN. He heard an officer state that that would be their next stop, just before he deserted.
When he left the group there were approx 300 men with the following weapons: 11 LMG’s (180 rds ea), 25 SMG’s (450 rds ea), 3 HMG’s (1,000 rds ea), 3-14.5mm AT Rifles (30 rds ea), 257 M1891 Rifles (130 rds ea), 1 TT1930 Pistol and two grenades per man.

5. PRESENT ENEMY MISSION:
The present mission of the 4th Bn is to assemble at CHORWON.

7. MORALE:
The morale of the 4th Bn was low because of food shortage and the clothing was insufficient for this weather.
