FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0149) 8 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: PANG Chon Yong (方天龍).
AGE: 20
RANK: Jr Lt

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and willingly gave information which seemed fairly reliable, however, he is not recommended for further interrogation.

3. OWN ORGANIZATION:
PW was inducted 7 Jul 50 at P’YONGYANG and received 15 days basic training with 3,000 other students. Upon termination of training they were commissioned Jr Lts 22 Jul 50. He was sent to CHINNAMP’O with 40 others and arrived there on the same day. There he was assigned to the 572nd Ind Regt and appointed a platoon leader. In the 572nd Regt there were 9 Bns; Bn Artillery 120mm Mortar Co, 76mm “ZIS 3” Co, 45mm AT Gun Co, SMG Co, AA MG Co, and a rear unit (Co size) while they were in CHINNAMP’O. O/a 25 Aug 50, the 1st 2nd and 3rd Rifle Bns, 120mm Mortar Co, 76mm “ZIS 3” Co, 45mm AT Gun Co, SMG Co, Rear unit and AA MG Plat, designated the 572nd Regt departed. The strength was approx 2000. They arrived at an unk place which was located at approx 15 kms E of P’YONGYANG for 5 days for practice firing after which they went back to P’YONGYANG. There they were issued 82mm Mortars (18), HMGg (10), LMG’s (15), SMG’s (950), 76mm “ZIS 3” Guns (2), ammo and three trucks.
O/a 5 Sep the Regt departed and arrived at KUMCH’ON (BT7925) 7 Sep 50 by rail. After departing again in darkness on trains they were attacked by enemy aircraft and practically all the cars were burned or destroyed. The Regt lost approx 20 men, 1 76mm Gun, food (2 months supply) and ammo. O/a 9 Sep 50 on a new train they departed and arrived at SUSAENG NI (CS1461). There they got off the train and crossed the HAN River on ferry and arrived at YONDUNGP’O (CS1554) o/a 10 Sep 50. They continued marching and arrived at SUWON o/a 11 Sep 50. There they got on train again and after a day of travelling arrived at CHONAN. From there they marched to NAMPYONG (CP0379) passing through CHOCHIWON, NONSAN, CHONGUP and KWANGJU and arrived on 7 Sep 50. Then the 3rd Bn was sent to MOKP’O arriving there on 20 Sep with the Regt Hg stationed there. The Bn was at MOKP'O until 26 Sep. As the Bn was ordered to retreat they arrived at HAMNYOL (CQ1292) on 29 Sep by rail. From there they marched to YOSAN (CQ2791) where it joined the 2nd Bn. That cay they were attacked by UN forces and they all dispersed into the mountains. After 10 days of wandering he found his Bn (approx 150 troops) and 50 other survivors at vic MUJU (CQ7985) 10 Oct. They arrived at OBONG SAN (CR9472) 27 Oct via SONGNI SAN and PAESAK SAN. 29 Oct PW came down from the Mts and surrendered to SK Police.

4. PRESENT ENEMY GROUPS:
When PW separated from his Bn, there were approx 200 troops at OBONG SAN near KOESANAN (CR9a75). They were armed with 100 rifles (60 rds ea), 15 SMGs (70 rds ea), 2 LMGs (400 rds ea) and a few hand grenades. He also hoard that there were approx 300 troops near OBONG SAN. PW heard that they were troops of a Soourity Force.

5. PRESENT ENEMY MISSION:
He did not know that the present mission of the Bn was however, he heard that they were heading for CHUNCHON via SOBAEK and TAEBAEK SAN.

6. PRESENT ENEMY SUPPLY & EQUIPMENT:
They looted food from villages or directly from fields.
Ammo which they carried prior to departure from MOKP’O was all they had.
PW turned his SMG into SK Police upon surrendering.

7. PRESENT ENEMY METHODS:
They depended on one compass, binoculars and map while they were retreating north.

8. PERSONALITIES:
3rd Bn Comdr KIM Che Su (金在守) age 30, Major.
Mortar Co CO CHANG Tu Chun (張豆春) age 23, Lt.

9. PROPAGANDA:
They were told that if they want to live, follow the Bn CO, and if they wanted to die, surrender to the UN Forces.
