FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS - LDI - 0178) 20 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHONG, Won Chol (奠源喆)
AGE: 37
RANK: Sr Lt
DUTY: Supply Clerk
UNIT: Rear Engr Regt, 10th Bn
DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: 16 Nov 50 at SONGCHON (BU-6146)
CIVIL OCCUPATION: Clerk at the P’YONGYANG Supply Depot.
EDUCATION: Primary School 6 years


2. ASSESSMENT:
PW had limited education and approximately two months of military service. Due to his poor memory it was unable to obtain reliable information. Further interrogation is not recommended.

3. TO/E, DISPOSITION:
a. OWN UNIT
PW employed at the P’YONGYANG Supply Depot as a clerk from 28 Jun 50. O/a 1 Jul 50 the P’YONGYANG Supply Depot was redesignated the 3rd Bn of Engr Regt. He was then commissioned a Sr Lt. O/a 26 Sep 50, he and approximately 150 others were transferred and ordered to the 10th Bn of the Rear Engr Regt, located at TAEJON.
Departed P’YONGYANG o/a 26 Sep 50 and arrived at CHORWON o/a 30 Sep 50. Here PW and four others decided to return to P’YONGYANG because they had received no training and they did not wish to go into combat. O/a 1 Oct 50, the five departed CHCRWON and arrived at P’YONGYANG o/a 12 Oct 50. O/a 14 Oct 50, PW alone departed P’YONGYANG and arrived at SONGCHON o/a 10 Nov 50 and stayed with relatives. 16 Nov 50, he was captured by the Security Police in SONGCHON.
PW stated the 3rd Bn consisted of approximately 350 men. The guard unit (40 men) was armed with 36 - The Japanese type 99 rifles without ammo.
Food was secured from the farmers. 25% of the crop (rice and vegetables) were donated by the farmers. Meat was purchased.
Communication by telephone and runners.
Transportation section had approximately 10 trucks (Japanese and Russian).
He heard from a member of the 3rd Bn, who came to P’YONGYANG, that the 3rd Bn was located at TOKCHON o/a 14 Oct 50.
Mission of the Rear Engr Regt was to repair buildings and bridges after an advance. They intended to send technicians to accomplish their mission after orders had been received from the Home Ministry.

4. MORALE:
PW stated that the morale was low because all the troops had the idea of working instead of fighting for their country.
