Prisoner was cooperative and willing to give information which is considered fairly reliable. Since he deserted his unit 1 Sep 50 after having served less than 2 months, information was old as well as limited. Further interrogation unnecessary.
3. OWN UNIT:PW was inducted 7 Jul 50 at SUNCH’ON and assigned to the P‘YONGYANG Rear Echelon Security Hq. After 15 days of administrative training he was commissioned Jr Lt and assigned as Supply Officer in the Hq Clothing Section. He remained in this section until 1 Sep 50 when he deserted and returned to his home in SUNCH’ON. He remained in hiding until 28 Oct 50 when, ho surrendered.
The P’YONGYANG Rear Echelon Security Hq was under the command of Lt Gen PAK Hun Il (박흔일). PW hoard that all NKA Security Units were attached to this Hq. PW observud about 100 officers and approx 100 enlisted guards.
Other Units:
On the morning of 20 Oct 50, a force of about 400 to 500 NK troops arrived at SUNCH’ON. PW heard from several of these troops that they were headed toward KANGGYE (BA-9738). These men had retreated from the TAEGU front and were armed mostly with Russian M-1891/30 rifles. Some carried PPSH SMGs. On the afternoon of the same day, they fled when enemy paratroopers landed. PW believes many were killed by enemy fighters that strafed them when they fled. Several discarded their weapons which were later picked up by the local police.
PW hoard that o/a 20 Oct 50, approx 15 NK troops raided the village of UNSON MYON (BU-4666) killing some local police.
4. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT:About 90% of the 160 guards of tho P’YONGYANG Rear Echelon Security Hq were armed with Russian M-1891/30 rifles. Remainder were equipped with PPSH SMGs. There was also ono “Maxim” HMG. 50 of the higher ranking officers were armed with Russian “Tokarov” pistols. Tho Hq unit obtained food from the local government which in turn obtained it from the people as tax. The P’YONGYANG Rear Echelon Security Hq supplied clothing manufactured at a local factory for all security units.
The Security Hq had 5 Russian trucks and 2 jeeps. Radio and telephones were used at the Hq but amount or other details were unknown.
