3. MILITARY HISTORY:
7 Aug 50 - Inducted into the 489th Unit, Supply Plat as a Jr Lt at P’YONGYANG. PW was to receive military training, but due to UN aircraft he was assigned as mess officer for the 489th Unit.
Mid Sep 50 - After staying at P’YONGYANG for about 20 days the 489th Unit departed that city on a train and arrived at TAEJON. Movement was slow due to UN aircraft and damaged bridges. Then it continued its trip on the train and arrived at KUMCHON (金泉) on 20 Sep 50.
Soon after arriving at KUMCHON PW was sent to a rear area to obtain blankets. Enroute PW purposely shot his right arm and reported to his superior that he was wounded by enemy fire. Then he was sent to an NK hospital in TAEJON. After staying at this hospital for about 3 or 4 days all patients who were able to walk were told to march to CHOCH’IWON (鳥致院).
o/a 25 Sep 50 - PW arrived at CHOCH’IWON with large number of slightly wounded patients. At CHOCH’IWON they were told that UN forces were nearby so some of them returned to TAEJON and some stayed at civilian homes in that vicinity. PW and a group of patients decided to retreat north. There was no one in charge of the group and they walked in small groups. At times PW walked alone, then met some stragglers and followed them. While retreating northward PW observed a large organized group of NKA stragglers who called themselves the 15th Div. Actually PW believed that there were various units represented in this 15th Div. PW observed this 15th Div in the vicinity of ICH’ON (approx date unk) and was told by the officers to join the group, but PW feigned a useless right arm and became separated from them.
23 Nov 50 - After accompanying various NK stragglers PW arrived at NUNGGI (phonetic) and surrendered to a police station.

During the early part of Nov 50 PW observed 50 - 60 CCF troops marching southward at SACHANG NI (社倉里). These troops appeared to be in good physical condition and wore winter clothing. Each man was armed with a rifle and there were about 5 horses.
During the period o/a 10 Nov 50 to 15 Nov 50 PW again observed CCF troops along the west side of the CHOSIN Reservoir. PW believed that there were a large number of CCF troops, but could not estimate the number as the CCF troops stayed in civilian homes and trenches. PW observed only rifles being carried by the troops. About half of them appeared to have no weapons. These troops moved about only at night and PW walked during the day time so he could not give detailed information.
