FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS LDI - 0156) 10 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative, however, due to his short military service his information was limited. He does not warrant further interrogation.

3. OWN UNIT:
PW was inducted on 1 Sep 50, at SUNCH’ON (YD-5367) and arrived at P’YONGYANG 2 Sep 50. He was then assigned to the 1st Bn, 2nd Sig Regt, Sig Sec of the Peoples’ Welfare Department, located at KWANGDONGRI (YD-4155) and arrived there 3 Oct 50, where he was commissioned a Jr Lt upon arrival. A few days later he was promoted to Lt. His Bn consisted of 218 men who were engaged in stringing communication lines between Regt Hg at KOCHON-MYON (YD-5340) and KWANG-DONGRI. The Bn was stationed at KWANG-DONGRI until 12 Oct 50 when it was ordered to retreat to TOKCHON (BV-6904). While enroute there PW deserted his unit at SUNCHON, his home town, where he hid at home until 28 Oct 50 when he surrendered.
When PW deserted his Bn its strength was about 216 men and it had 5 Japanese rifles, 4 Russian rifles, 15 horses, 3 wagons, (6) 500 meter rolls of telephone lines and 1 Russian truck.
Present disposition of unit is unknown except that it was to retreat to TOKCHON.
On 29 Oct 50, he observed many troops (exact number unknown) retreating north at SAINGJANG (YD-4848), and he heard that they were headed for HUICHON (BV-684,9). Majority of the troops were unarmed.

4. MISSION
Mission of PW’s unit was to withdraw to TOKCHON where it was to reorganize for a counter attack.

5. ENEMY SUPPLY AND EQUIPMENT
Food consisted of Rice, Beans, and Corn and was obtained from the regimental supply section.
PW’s Bn had six 500 meter spools of telephone wire and 3 Russian field phones. He heard these equipment were supplied from a warehouse at MARAM.

6. MISCELLANEOUS
Communication was by field phones and runners.
Troop movement during retreat was conducted at nights in single file over mountain trails.
Morale among PW’s Bn was very low because most of them wore forced to join the Army. Many of the teenagers in the unit desired very much to return home.
PW read two UN Safe Conduct Leaflets on 20 Oct 50 at SUNCHON. He also heard a UN air broadcast at an unknown location which was understandable.
