FIELD REPORT (528 - LDI - 0112) 13 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was wounded in the abdomen and right thigh. PW was a mason at ANTUNG prior to being inducted into the CCF. While trying to rejoin his unit, PW was captured. PW was cooperative but of below average intelligence. Interrogation was conducted thru a Korean interpreter who has knowledge of Chinese. Evaluation of information obtained should be assessed accordingly. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was inducted into the CCF at ANTUNG 21 Aug 50 and was assigned to the 40th Army (Div u/k), 358th Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, as a cook. PW received no basic training. O/a 8 Oct 50, the Div crossed the border and arrived at SINUIJU. PW’s unit continued to march and arrived at HAGASAN (40 km S of SINUIJU) o/a 090600 Oct 50. On the night of 9 Oct 50, PW’s unit departed HAGASAN on foot and arrived at u/k location on 21 Oct 50. Travelling was done only at night. PW’s unit was engaged at this location for approx three (3) days. O/a 24 Oct, PW’s unit withdrew and was separated into small elements. PW and two others lost contact with their unit while retreating and while attempting to rejoin his unit PW was captured 12 Nov 50.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
PW heard from his Co Comdr that the 40th Army was composed of 6 Div’s (designation unk). PW also heard that each Div consisted of 4 Regts.
The 358th Regt consisted of 3 Inf Bn’s. The 2nd Bn consisted of three (3) Rifle Cos (4th, 5th, & 6th) and one (1) HW Co. The 4th Co consisted of 4 platoons.
PW heard that the present strength of the Div is l1,000. Present strength of Regt, Bn, & Co unknown to PW.

c. Equipment:
PW heard that the HW Co had 2 × 120mm mortars (Russian make), 2 × 81mm mortars (US make), 2 × 82mm mortars (Russian make), 2 × 45mm (?) mortars, 2 HMGS, and 2 Bazookas (Russian make). The men were armed with Jap and Russian rifles. PW heard that the above equipment were brought with the unit when it crossed the border.
PW did not observe any tanks or artillery pieces in his unit, nor did he observe any since crossing the border.

d. Camouflage:
PW stated that each man in the unit digs his own fox hole during the night and conceals himself during the day. The fox holes are camouflaged with pine branches and grass.

e. Tactics:
PW stated that his unit moves during the night and hides during the, day.

f. Morale:
The morale of PW’s unit was low because the majority of the men are married and wanted to go home.

4. GENERAL:
a. Unit Designation of His Original CCF Unit:
40th Army (Div unk), 358th Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, 4th Plat.

b. There was one Chinese-Korean interpreter (Korean) in each Co.

c. Uniform Worn at Time of Interrogation:
PW was wearing the CCF summer uniform and summer shoes at time of interrogation.
PW’s unit travelled on foot after crossing border
