PW was fairly cooperative but claimed to have less military knowledge than a common soldier. Reliability very doubtful.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
1 Jun 1949: PW a member of the Labor Party (Since Jun 48) entered the P’YONGYANG Home Affair Security Leaders School.
31 Dec 1949: Graduated as a Jr Lt along with 800 others.
7 Jan 1950: Assigned to 3rd Border Constabulary Brigade, Rear Hq Clothing Section at CHUKCHON NI (YC 0922) as Section Chief. 50 of s fellow graduates were assigned also.
1 Jul 1950: 3rd Brigade moved to KAESONG (BT 8805) and was redesignated as 9th Div. PW assigned to Arty Regt Clothing Section as Section Chief.
10 Jul 1950 : Promoted to Lt, put in charge of the “Misc Affairs” Section.
11 Jul 1950: Entered SEOUL with Arty Regt and lost ½ (600) of unit in air raid so went about recruiting volunteers and training conscripts from N KOREA.
19 Aug 1950: 9th Div arrived TAEJON.
29 Aug 1950: 9th Div arrived HYOPCH’ON Unit engaged in battle here. Div Chief of Staff, Sr Col TAE, Chu Huk (太朱赫) was killed here.
25 Sep 1950: Started to retreat with Arty Regt Hq.
9 Oct 1950: Crossed 38th Parallel.
25 Oct 1950: Reached MASNGSAN (BU 8792) PW heard that unit was going to MANCHURIA, so he deserted.
30 Oct 1950: Captured.
Unit History:
9th Div Arty Hq Staff Members including 4 field, 6 company grade officers and some 200 stragglers of the Regt passed through (on foot) MAENGSAN (BU 8792) on 25 Oct 1950 with the intention of going to MANCHURIA. Each man was equipped with small arms and approx 50 rds of ammo.
Knowledge of Other Units:
Including elements of the 105th Tank Unit and totalling about 10,000, (mostly with small arms) passed through the same area, all with intention of going to MANCHURIA.

KIM, Sung Hwan (金昇煥), Col, - 9th Div Arty C/S (as of 23 Sep 50), age - 28. Was in MAENGSAN (BU 8792) on 25 Oct 1950 on his way north.
KIM, Sung Chun (金昇俊), Lt Col, - 9th Div Arty Culture Officer, age - 35.
CH’OE, Tal Un (崔達言), Sr Col - 9th Div Culture Chief, age - 40.
