FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1240) 21 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: YANG, Cheng Hsing (楊正興) (chinese)
RANK: Pvt

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked freely. He was a former Nationalist soldier captured by the CCF.
PW was in good physical condition at the time of interrogation.
Information seems reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF 4TH FIELD ARMY, 40TH ARMY, 120TH DIV, 359TH REGT, 1ST BN, MEDICAL SOD (as of Dec 49):
359th Regt was composed of 3 Bn’s.
1st Bn was composed of 3 Inf companies, Hvy Weapons Co (HAG & Mortar), Medical Sqd, Sig Sqd, and Telephone Sąd.
Inf Co: Personnel - EM & Officer approx 170. 9 IMG’s, 6 × 60 mm Mortar, 30 M38 Rifle and 4 Grenades per man.
Remarks: Some troops were not armed with weapons because of the lack of equipment.
Hvy Weapons Co: Approx 210, 3 HMG’s, 4 Mortar (Type & Caliber unk).
Remarks: PW did not know why they had only the above-mentioned weapons.
Medical Sqd: EM & Officer approx 12, 12 M38 Rifle (100 rds ea).
Remarks: Personnel in the Sig Sqd were used as runners.
Telephone Sqd: Approx 8 men, 1 field telephone and wire.
Remarks: wire was caarried on the backs of personnel.
PW observed three NK interpreters in one Inf Company and two NK Medics in the PW’s Medical Sqd. These Koreans came with them from MANCHURIA.
PW’s unit was intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU River.
Parts of PW’s unit had never been integrated into Korean units.

4. LOCATIONS AND ACTIVITIES:
PW stated that his Medical Sqd was separated for 15 days from their Bn because of unfamiliar terrain. While they were searching for the Bn, the PW was captured by US troops (location unknown) 17 Nov 50.
After crossing the Manchurian Border about a month ago (Oct 50), the PW’s battalion travelled only at night, sleeping in fox holes during the day. They did not participate in preparing any defensive positions during their travel Southward.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW served in the Nationalist Army (53rd Army, l6th Div, 37th Regt) from Jan 42 to Aug 47 in KAI-YUAN (開原).
PW was captured by the Rth Route Army at MU-YUAN-PAO (五遠得) approx 14 Km from KAI-YUAN (開原) Aug 47.
The PW was conscripted into the 40th Army, 120th Div, 359th Regt, 1st Bn at WU-YUAN-PAO and remained there until Sep 48.
With the 40th Army, the PW travelled to CHTN-CHOU (錦州.) PEIPING (北平), HANKOU (漢口), HUNAN (湖南), KWANGSI (広西), KWANGTUNG (広東) and arrived at ANTUNG (安東) on 27 May 50.
The PW stated that the entire 1st Battalion departed from ANTUNG on 20 Sep 50 on foot and crossed the Manchurian Border (date unknown). Point of entry into KOREA unknown.
PW’s unit did not participate in the invasion of HAINAN Island.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Troops of the PW’s unit brought 3 days ration with them when they crossed the Manchurian Border.
After they ate their rations, they obtained their food from villagers as they advanced.

7. MORALE:
The morale of the PW’s unit was low due to the lack of food and ammo. Furthermore, a majority of the troops were formerly with the Nationalist Army; therefore, they did not want to help the NKA.

8. SIGNAL COMMUNICATIONS:
One field telephone and runners vere used at the Battalion level.

9. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW did not volunteer for Korean service, nor did his unit.
CCF soldiers did not receive any instructions to appear to be volunteers if captured.

PAY RATE:
Pvt (战士) - 11,000 Yuan
Former Nationalist soldiers were conscripted into CCF units when they were captured. Captured equipment was utilized by the CCF at the present time.
