PW NAME: HWANG, YONG IK (황용익) (黃龍益)
RANK: 2nd Lieutenant
ORGANIZATION: 13th Div, Div Arty Hq, Cultural Section.
DUTIES: Cultural Section Clerk - General duties.
EDUCATION: Normal School (3 years)

OCCUPATION: Primary School Teacher

ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and intelligent.
Information seems reliable.

Approximately 100 rds to each gun.
Originally as of Sep 50 10 to 30 rounds to each gun remained. Some guns were idle bcause of exhausted ammo.
Some guns pulled by manpower due to lack of vehicles.
All the 76 mm & 120 mm guns were left in TABU DONG when the regiment retreated.

LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW was separaeted from his unit during retreat.
The first Division was located west of TABU DONG and the 3rd Division on the east. These two Divisions retreated 2 days before the 13th Division. These two Divisions were believed to have retreated in orderly fashion, taking most of their equipment with them.
The 13th Artillery Regimental commander, name unknown, was killed on 17th Sep 50 by artillery fire in the TABU DONG area.

PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted 11 Mar 50 in SINUIJU and assigned duties in the cultural section as a clerk. Received no military training.
All members of the youth training center were sent to YONGCHON by train for what was believed, training purposes. Here, the 13th Rifle Division was formed, and PW assigned to the cultural section.

All above officers received trainig in the Military Academy at PYONGYANG.

REPLACEMENTS:
On 5 Sep 50. approximately 300 conscripted South Koreans from SEOUL and were placed in the 13th Division Artillery as replacements. All were unarmed. What few rifles they had, were scrounged in the hills. Each man was issued 2 grenades. All were untrained. Many of these replacements were used as ammo bearers and for general duties.
Many conscripted South Koreans were used as replacements in rifle units. No figures are available.

FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was fairly good until reaching the NAKTONG River. As of September, food bed to be seized off the land, as no supplies were received. Ate one to two meals a day.
As of September, ammunition was irregularly received. Usually, approximately 200 rounds of Artillery ammo were brought in wagons every 2 to 3 days. Ammo supplies were issued from SANGJU.

MORALE:
Up until August, morale was extremely high. As of September, morale was low due to steady retreat and lack of supplies. If the 13th Division were to undergo another heavy attacks, PW believes that they would surrender in large numbers.
Many officers were overheard saying that war was lost.
