3. MILITARY HISTORY:PW was inducted into the military service on 21 Jul 50 at PYONG YANG. Ha was attached to the 208th Unit, 17th Training Co for a period of 8 days and received basic training (gunnery).
PW and about 50 men of the 208th Unit, 17th Training Co were transferred to the WONSAN (原山) 345th Unit, 2nd Tank Bn, 1st Co on 22 Aug 50.
On or about 17 Sep 50, the entire 345th Unit moved to CHATANG NI (車耑里) arriving on the night of 23rd Sep 50. Movement was by rail. PW observed six T-34 tanks on freight cars connected to the rear of the troop train.
PW rode tank from CHATANG NI to SEOUL. The other units marched to SEOUL at night.
4. STRENGTH & ARMAMENT:The 345th Unit consisted of approx 800 men. The following units were attached to the 345th.
2 Tank Bns, 1 Rapid Fire Gun Co, 1 Engineer Co, and 1 Mechanized Infantry Bn.
The tank battalion consisted of six T-34 tanks (3 to a Bn) and the full strength of each Bn was approx 80 men.
Approx 80 per cent of the 345th Unit were armed with Russian rifles and were issued about 30 to 40 rds of ammo. The remaining 20 par cent were armed with PPsh Sub-Machine Guns and carried 142 rds of ammo per gun.
The men with rifles were issued two band grenades each.
5. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:PW deserted his unit on the morning of 26 Sep 50 and gave himself up to the ROK Marines.
6. SPECIAL EEI:Majority of the enlisted men hated officers. PW wanted to shoot his officer and desert the unit. Did not observe any safe conduct passes.
