FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0930) 28 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW deserted his unit and surrendered. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. CHRONOLOGY:
10 Jul 50Drafted into the volunteer corps at SEOUL.
15 Jul 50A group of 1,000 men departed from SEOUL on foot.
30 Jul 50They arrived at YONGDONG via SOWON, CH'ONAN, and TAJON. The 1,000 men travelled in three (3) groups and they were attached once by aircraft near TAEJON. Six (6) men were wounded. They were assigned to the 3rd Div as a replacement unit.
1 Aug 50The replacement unit departed YONGDONG.
11 Aug 50They arrived at YANG MOK (若木), the unit was divided into groups and they were assigned to various units of the 3rd Div. PW was assigned to the Medical Unit.
5 Sep 50The Medical Unit arrived at a point 14 km N of SONGJU where he was temporary detailed to evacuation of wounded.
13 Sep 50A group of 20 men of the medical uinit crossed the NAKTONG River 3 km N of WAEGWAN as an advance party of the unit.
19 Sep 50PW heard that US tank Forces had entered WAEGWAN (倭館) and the Medical Unit was ordered to retreat.
22 Sep 50The Medical Unit arrived at NAKTONG ‘NI after crossing the NAKTONG River under machine gun fire.
23 Sep 50PW deserted his unit and hid in a village air raid shelter until the US Forces arrived. He, then, surrendered.


b. ACTUAL BATTLE ORGANIZATION AND STRENGTH:
PW believes the total strength of the Medical Unit of the 3rd Div was 300 men.

c. EQUIPMENT:
The medical Unit of the 3rd Div was equipped with two (2) US jeeps one (1) US 3/4 ton truck, one (1) Dodge truck, one (1) NISSAN truck, one (1) ambulance.
All the men were armed with rifles and 7 rounds. A few of the men were given hand grenades

d. INTENTIONS:
PW heard that the 7th Reg of the 3rd Div succeed in retreating to SANGJU (尙州) and he also heard that the 8th and 9th Regiments nf the 3rd Div were ordered to withdraw to CH'UP'UNG YONG (秋風嶺) and set up defensive positions there.
PW, heard that the 105th Tank Div was ordered to move into CH’UP’UNG YONG and set up defensive positions.
PW also heard that the 13th Div was encircled by US Forces and probably wiped out.

f. MORALE AND PROPAGANDA:
Most units were composed of large numbers of replacements and their morale was low. Especially, since this replacements assigned from the volunteer corps were ill-trained and had no will to fight.
PW saw US propaganda leaflets twice at YANG MOK (養木). He believes that the propaganda leaflets were effective in leading the newly assigned replacements to desert their units. PW states that he made plans, together with nine (9) other members of his unit, to desert when opportunity permitted such on action.

4. GENERAL:
PW observed 50 US PsW marching in SEOUL Jul 50. Many US PsW were confined in a stockade at CHOCH’IWON.
He observed 7 US wounded PsW receiving medical treatment at YONG DONG.
Again, near YANG MOK, PW observed 1 US Air Corps Captain and a Nisei soldier (PW spoke to US Air Corps Captain) confined together with PsW in a temporary enclosure.
The troops were told that the US Forces were firing cholera laden artillery shells. Therefore, all troops were given two (2) cholera immunization shots at YANG MOK from 20 Sep 50 to 30 Sep 50.
PW contracted Malaria at YANG MOK and he was given 2 US atabrine tablets and one injection.
