ASSESSMENT:
Informant was cooperative. Information - reliable.

MILITARY HISTORY:
PW was inducted on 9 Aug '50 at SINUIJU (新義州) and received 15 days of basic training.
The 42nd Regt departed from SINUIJU on 26 Aug '50 by rail and foot and arrived SEOUL on 7 Sep '50.
Departed SEOUL on 11 Sep '50 and arrived SOGA (素砂) on 12 Sep '50.
The unit returned to SEOUL on 21 Sep '50, where the whole regt assembled at a middle school called KYONGI CHUN HAKYO (京妓中學校).
Departed for MAPO (麻浦) on 24 Sep '50 where they were engaged in building gun emplacement near a temporary wooden bridge for tank defense. There were approx 20 men with 5 SIMONOV A/T Rifles in this emplacement. The others were dispersed in the surrounding hills.
As the UN tanks fired unmercifully at PW's unit, they were ordered to fight to the last by their CO, a 2nd Lt. However, he was shot to death by his own men and they deserted to a tunnel near SHIN CHON (新村).
On 25 Sep '50, subject and 20 others were captured by the SK Security Police.

WEAPONS AND PERSONNEL:
The 42 Regt was a mechanized unit, but there was no mechanized equipment. Strength - approx 400 men. There were 3 Bns in the regt end 3 Cos in each Bn. Approx 130 men were attached to each Bn. There was also a 76mm Auto-Machine Cannon Co attached directly under the regt. The strength of this co was approx 20 men. The 42 Regt was armed with the following:

Source believes that the present strength of the regt is about 50 men. The majority are casualties or have been taken prisoner.

MORALE:
Morale was very low because personnel were hungry, and because they were forcibly conscripted.
Officers threatened men who wanted to surrender.
PW heard that surrender leaflets were dropped, but he did not observe any.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
PW does not think that the NKA will defend the 38th parallel. There is strong feeling of resentment against the officers by the men of the NKA.
