Inducted on 28 Jul 50 and attached to 1231 Unit (Naval) at WON SAN (元山). This unit is made up of 4 companies with a total strength of 1,200 men. There is a Naval base at WON SAN.
One guard company of 140 men departed WON SAN on 8 Sep 50 and arrived SEOUL on 11 Sep 50 by train.
Prior to capture PW’s unit was guarding a cave in which Army and Naval uniforms and ammunition were stored. This cave was located approx 150m east of the SAN CHU CHON (三中井 ) department store in SEOUL.
ARMAMENT:The 1231 Unit had approx 800 rifles and 400 hand grenades, not enough to arm every man in the unit.
FOREIGN ELEMENTS:On 1 Aug 50 a Russian Jr Lt. and an NCO inspected the barracks of the unit at WON SAN. On 15 Sep 50 a Russian Naval officer (JG) and an 1 CO also inspected the unit.
