ASSESSMENT:
PW was so happy to be alive after several hellish days and nights that he was more than anxious to please. Information is considered reliable.

MILITARY HISTORY:
25 Jul '50 inducted at WONSAN. Assigned to the 1st Co, Indep Guard Bn, 546 Unit and did guard duty at WONSAN.
5 Sep '50 the 546 Unit, Indep Guard Bn, 1st Co departed WONSAN. There were no other Co's or Bn's in the 546 Unit as of that date.
10 Sep '50 arrived SEOUL. Guard duty at a naval uniform MFG plant and at a clothing warehouse.
22 Sep '50 unit redesignated the Marine Corps and all personnel changed to army uniform.
The unit then moved into the hills back of the naval HQ building and dug individual foxholes.
On the night of 24 Sep '50 one officer and 30 men including PW were sent out to a RR line approx 2km W of the naval HQ building with instructions to defend that position at ell costs. They were shelled and fired on by UN troops. PW hid for the night. Surrendered to local civilian police. The whereabouts of the 130 men of his unit unknown.

WEAPON AND PERSONNEL:
546 Unit, Indep Guard Bn, 1st Co: 6 officers, 160 men, 80 Russian rifles and 80 rds of ammo per man, including men without rifles.

SUPPLY DUMP:
LOCATION: Vicinity of airfield on peninsula across bay from WONSAN. (see sketch)
OBSERVATION: 3 Aug '50 - 5 Sep '50.
Source was a guard, and also worked piling up ammo boxes and torpedoes within tunnel "A" during above period. Ammo and torpedoes were transported by trucks at night due to constant daylight air strafing on anything that moved. Air strikes had previously knocked out the oil refinery, locomotive wheel mfg plant and most of the bldgs around the KAIMA RR Station along the KEIGEN RR line.
There were no serviceable airplanes or NK air activity at the airfield. The bombing by US planes up to 5 Sep '50 had never been near the tunnels.
SIZE OF TORPEDGES: Approx 18 inches diameter, 6 feet long. Painted sky blue. No screws. No markings. Only 4 torpedoes loaded on one Russian make “ZIS” truck at a time. Torpedoes unloaded by hand operated winches from truck. to concrete floor End then rolled into place within tunnel. Source worked in the unloading detail for one night and unloaded 24 torpedoes. There were many more lined in neat rows.
TYPE OF AMMO:
Rifle ammo packed in boxes approx 8" X 10" X 14".
Arty shells approx 3 inches diameter, 16 inches long packed in boxes 12"x16"x24". (12 or 15 rds per box) Russian words printed on boxes. No estimate of number of boxes could be given.

MORALE:
PW is strongly against the NKPA and avoided being inducted until Jul '50 when every available male 18 to 40 yrs of age regardless of physical condition was forcibly inducted. Taking a men’s height and weight comprised the physical examination, and even this was not done in every case.
As of Dec '49 the draft quota was increased. Farseeing being drafted, PW left home in Mar '50 and decided to go to RAJIN, N Korea (Russian-Korean border town) because he heard that, that town was a cold place one bis chance of finding a job was much greater than anywhere else. Upon reaching RAJIN and finding no job he returned home.
Morale of the troops in his company was very low because most of them are farmers with hardly any military training.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
The officers in the 546 Unit kept telling the men daily that the NKPA bed taken over all of S Korea. Up to 22 Sep '50, they were also told that the forces which landed at INCHON were wiped out.
PW believes that the UN troops will meet little resistance after crossing the 38th parallel because they are hardly any trained troops remaining in N Korea.

For the AC of S, G-2:
