28 Jul 50 - Commissioned in the NKPA at P'YONGYANG as Jr Lt.
28 Jul 50 - 8 Aug 50 - Assigned to the 849th Independent AT Bn. 849th AT Bn was organized 23 Jul 50, at P’YONGYANG, consisting of 408 men, Organization as follows:
Three (3) companies, 11 x 57-mm AT Guns, 210 men
Ammunition Plt, 20 men
Signal Sqd, 8 men, 2 Field Telephones
HMG Plt, 3 HMG
Engr Co
PTRS Co, 9 x 14.5-mm PTRS
Supply Plt
26 x trucks.
8 Aug 50 - 849th Ind AT Bn departed P'YONGYANG by truck.
20 Aug 50 - Arrived SEOUL.
20 Aug 50 - 22 Aug 50 - 849th AT Bn rested in the outskirts of SEOUL.
22 Aug 50 - Boarded train at SEOUL.
29 Aug 50 - Arrived WONJU (原州).
29 Aug 50 - 30 Aug 50 - Remained in WONJU. Departed. WONJU by truck.
1 Sep 50 - 849th AT Bn arrived YONGJU (榮州). Route of travel was via CHECH’ON and TANYANG (丹陽).
1 Sep 50 - 4 Sep 50 - Bn remained at YONGJU.
4 Sep 50 - Departed YONGJU by truck.
6 Sep 50 - Arrived KUMCH'ON (金泉). Route of travel. was via YECH’ON (禮泉), HAMCH’ANG (咸昌), and SANGJU.
6 Sep 50 - 849th AT Bn incorporated into I Corps. I Corps Hqs located in ANDONG, hearsay. 849th AT Bn received orders from I Corps Hqs to destroy UN tanks in YANGMOK Area. Bn departed KUMCH’ON by truck.
8 Sep 50 - Bn arrived YANGMOK. Unit proceeded to KUMJU Mt, 2 km N of YANGMOK.
8 Sep 50 - 17 Sep 50 -Bn remained in the area. 10 trucks destroyed by UN air attack on 8 Sep 50. No casualties, no less of guns. There were no other NKPA units in the area.
17 Sep 50 - YANGMOK Area bombarded by UN artillery. No effect. There were no other NKPA units in the area.
21 Sep 50 - PW was checking wire between I Corps Signal Plt, located 4 km E of YANGMOK, and 849th AT Bn. At 1200 hours, the area was shelled by m artillery. PW was wounded and surrendered to an American patrol. As of 1200 hrs, 21 Sep 50, 849th Unit was still in the same location and suffered no casualties or loss of guns. The unit did not have any radios.

PW observed elements of the 10th Mechanized Division in KUMCH’ON on 6 Sep 50. There were 20 x JS-3 tanks 2 km S of KUMCH’ON.

Morale:
Approx 50% of the troops of the 549th Bn were ready to surrender to the UN Forces. Th~ primary cause being that the men had read propaganda leaflets dropped by US aircraft on 16 Sep 50, concerning the INCH'ON Landing. PW stated that when he read the leaflet, he lost all hopes of ever winning the war. The remaining 50% were too well indoctrinated to surrender and would fight to the last man.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:

Red Cross Insignia: Insignia on the front, rear, sides and top of all NKPA Hospital tricks. Aid men wore red cross arm bands on the left arm and were aimed with rifles. NKPA units were ordered to fire on enemy aid men or hospital trucks.
Foreign Elements: PW observed approx 200 Russians in P’YONGYANG wearing civilian clothes, and heard that they were Military Advisors. Last observed Jul 50. There were no indications that RUSSIA or CCF would actively intervene in the Korean War.
