FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0928) 27 September 1950

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative. Limited information of tactical nature due to lack of training and because his duties were confined only to treatment of horses.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
24 Jul 50 - Inducted at CHINNMP’O (鎭南浦). 800 men. No basic training received. 800 men waited 10 days for initial. issue of uniforms.
4 Aug 50 - 800 men (replacements) departed CHINNAMP'O, by rail, arrived SEOUL, 13 Aug 50. No concentration of NK troops observed in SEOUL.
14 Aug 50 - RepfaCefil~mt unit departed SEOUL, marched, arrived YONGDUNGP'O (永登浦) 15 Aug 50. No NK troops or heavy equipment observed in YONGDUNGP’O.
15 Aug 50 - Replacement unit departed YONGDUNGP'O, marched, arrived SUWON (水原). Waited for transportation for 4 days. observed many volunteer Corps men unarmed. No transportation available.
D/u Aug 50 - Replacement unit departed SUWON, marched, arrived CH'UNGJU (忠州). Observed about 50 NK Security troops, policing area.
D/u Aug 50 - Departed CH'UNGJU. Replacement unit marched, arrived MUN'GYONG (聞慶). No troop movement in MUN’GYONG Area.
D/u Aug 50 -Replacement unit departed WN'GYONG, marched, arrived KUNWI (軍威), 1 Sep 50. From original 800 men in Replacement Unit which departed from CHINNAMP'O, only 250 arrived in KUNWI. 550 men deserted unit enroute due to lack of food anti medical attention.
Observed about 100 NK troops on the move 1 heading toward the front lines. However, no tanks or field pieces observed.
3 Sep 50 - Replacement unit (250 men) departed KUlWI, marched, arrived 10 Ian S of KUNWUI, 4 Sep 50.
4 Sep 50 - 250 men marched to about 1 km NE of HAJONG-DONG (下場洞) and arrived at the 13th Div Rear Hqs. Observed about 1,000 NK troops of 13th Div. No tanks or heavy equipment observed. This area was 13th Div Replacement Center. 250 replacements were assigned to various units of 13th Div. PW assigned with 6 other Pvt’s from Repl Unit. All replacements arrived at Replacement. Center from CHINNAMP'O unarmed.
9 Sep 50 - Veterinary unit personnel were one Major, one Sr Lt, one Jr Lt, all veterinarians, one M/Sgt, one Sr Sgt, one Sgt and seven Pvt’s. Departed Replacement Center, arrived same day in SANDONG-MYON (山東面) animal stable, which was converted into a hospital for horses. There were 9 wounded horses in the hospital with bullet and shell fragment wounds. No horses admitted to hospital if legs were broken. Duties of PW in hospital were veterinarian aide man and cook for hospital staffs. Rice was rationed and obtained from 13th Div Rear Replacement Center. (800 grams per person per meal.) Vegetables were obtained from nearby farms.

Mercurochrome
Penicillin
Iodine
Disinfectant
Glucose
Three seriously wounded horses died and three others were expected to die.
On 22 Sep 50, veterinary unit retreated to 5 km E of SONSAN (善山). Took along three slightly wounded horses. Aircraft started strafing area. When UN. troops entered area, PW surrendered.

Equipment:
All medical equipment was either destroyed or captured by UN troops in SANDONG-MYON when veterinary unit made a hurried withdrawal.

Communication:
PW states that when his unit marched to the front from SEOUL they marched during darkness on main highway and that the roads were in pretty good condition. Although bridges have been destroyed by aircraft, vehicles can be driven across rivers at shallow places. At deep spots in rivers, sand bags are used to bring stream bed to about 2 feet below surface of river.
Telephone poles and wire were all destroyed. Also electric wires were destroyed or rendered useless.

Morale and Propaganda:
PW's morale low. He was dragged from home by Armed Guard and was told that if he should refuse to join the NKPA, he would be shot and his family would not receive rations.
PW read propaganda leaflets 5 Sep 50, at 13th Div's Rear Replacement Center Hqs.
22 Sep 50, read another leaflet about the Invasion of INCH’ON Safe Conduct Pass was not seen.
