Attended school in JAPAN for 4 years and served in the Japanese Army for 20 days prior to the termination of World War Ⅱ. PW was cooperative, but information was limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
15 Jun 50 - Inducted into the NKA at HAEJU (海州). Assigned to the No 2 Hospital of the Internal Affairs Ministry in HAEJU as a medical officer with the rank of Lt (少尉).
25 Jun 50 - Departed HAEJU.
14 Jul 50 - Arrived SEOUL and was assigned to the Medical Unit of the 2nd Reserve Command Post, Advance Security Force Hqs.
18 Jul 50 - Departed SEOUL on 3 trucks.
23 Jul 50 - Arrived TAEJON. The Medical Unit was responsible for the welfare of the men assigned to the 2nd Reserve Command Post and remained in TAEJON for a period of one month.
2 Sep 50 - Departed TAEJON and arrived CHONJU.
The 2nd Reserve Command Post departed TAEJON and headed for KWANGJU.
3 Sep 50 - The Medical Unit treated the patients of the Security Forces stationed in the general area of CHONJU.
28 Sep 50 - US Forces arrived without any warning whatsoever and staff members of the Medical Unit scattered.
29 Sep 50 - PW attempted to escape north but was captured by a S. Korean Security Unit on the outskirts of CHONJU.
Unit Organization and Strength:
Last Known Composition of Unit: The Medical Unit, 2nd Reserve command Post, Advance Security Force Hqs, was composed of a Chief Surgeon, 15 doctors, 16 nurses and 15 nurses aide. (as of 28 Sep 50).
As of 2 sep 50, the 2nd Reserve Command Post of the Advance Security Force Hqs was composed of approximately 100 men.
Equipment:
The Medical Unit possessed one truck (as of 28 Sep 50).
Unit History:
The Advance Security Force was organized in SEOUL and its Hqs was located there.
Personalities:
Head of the Medical Unit was Maj (少佐) CHANG, Sung Hwan (張承換).
Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the unit gradually deteriorated along with the increase of wounded, whom the members of the Medical Unit were required to treat. They became aware of the futility of the war when they learned about the participation of the UN Forces in war against the NKA through the US propaganda leaflets.
4. GENERAL:The medical Unit was equipped with 80 beds, but they handled a maximum of 500 patients at CHONJU. During a period of approximately one month, they transferred from CHONJU 1,000 wounded patients to a rear echelon hospital for further treatment.
The death rate of the patients treated was approximately 25. The majority of deaths were due to tetanus. They suffered from an acute shortage of tetanus antitoxin, gangerene serum. penicillin, mercurochrome, and bandages.
