2. ASSESSMENT:
PW talked but was not cooperative. He stated that he was not a Communist.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
1 Mar 48 - Volunteered for the NKPA at KAECH'ON (价天). Assigned to 1st Div, Signal Bn, 3rd Co, 1st Plt. Received 18 months communication training.
13 Aug 50 - Arrived SEOUL. Hospitalized at the 15th Rear Hospital and 19th Rear Hospital for a month due to tuberculosis.
13 Sep 50 - Released from hospital. Commissioned Jr Lt after passing Signal Technical Examination.
13 Sep 50 - Departed SEOUL by train with 150 Jr Lt's.
16 Sep 50 - Arrived TAEJON. Assigned to 34th Ind Brigade Signal Co, as Chief of Repair Section, located at CHINJU (晋州) after passing another test.
17 Sep 50 - Departed TAEJON on truck with 12 Jr Lt's.
18 Sep 50 - Arrived NAMWON (南原). Departed by truck.
21 Sep 50 - Arrived SANCH'ONG (山淸). Joined the 34th Ind Brigade Signal Co which was retreating.
24 Sep 50 - Arrived NAMWON (南原). The 34th Brigade became disorganized. PW walked northward through mountains.
27 Sep 50 - Arrived OKCH'ON (沃川). Surrendered to US Forces with Safe Conduct Pass.

Unit Organization and Strength:
As of 21 Sep 50, only the Brigade Service Co's were at SANCH'ONG. The infantry units had already retreated.
The 34th Ind Brigade Service personnel numbered approx 1,000 including an artillery Co, a Signal Co, an Engineer Co, a Reconnaissance Co and Medical Co.

Unit History:
The unit was newly organized with "volunteers" from captured areas. 34th Brigade never fought against the UN Forces.

Equipment:
The 34th Brigade did not have any equipment or armament. The troops were all dressed in civilian clothes.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale of the 34th Brigade was low due to lack of experience and equipment.
PW read a UN Safe Conduct Pass o/a 26 Sep 50.

4. GENERAL:
The US PsW were treated without discrimination in the NKPA hospitals.
The South Koreans who were inducted into the NKPA from captured areas were sent back to their homes when unit was disbanded.
Rifle, PPsh M1941 SMGs, HMG, and hand grenades were said to be produced at the No 205 Plant located at SONGYORI (船橋里) approx 4 km SE of the P'YONGYANG RR Station.
All signal and communication equipment was made in the USSR.

5. REMARKS:
PW had a ROK Army handbook and a South Korean song book in possession during interrogation. PW stated that he obtained the ROK Army handbook o/a 1 Jun 50 while in North KOREA.
