WONSAN (KALMA PENINSULA)
The hard packed, white, sandy beach on the E coast of the KALMA PENINSULA extended approx 2 km in length and was about 100 m in width. Pine trees ranging from 10-15 m were scattered along the edge of the beach.
There were low, rolling, sandy hills about 10 m high between the beach and airfield, and fairly high hills from 10-50 ms of the air-field. The area of the airfield was flat (park and playground).
The main road (4 m, dirt) on the peninsula led from WONSAN and extended across the field and ran parallel to the shores, circumventing the peninsula. (asphalted to airfield). There were two dirt roads (3 m wide) and two to three 1 m wide paths leading from the beach to the airfield.
The water at a point about 50 m from shore was about 6-7 m deep. However, there were sand dunes in places which made the depth 2-3 m.
From 25 Jun 50, this beach and the entire peninsula were placed off-limits due to the fact that an army unit occupied the airfield and were engaged in the construction of fortifications on the N tip of the peninsula.
However, prior to 25 Jun 50, the beach was open to the public and was known as a swimming beach. A labor recuperation center was located on this beach and army personnel were authorized to enter at all times without any ID cards.
During 46 and 47, the sand from this beach was used at a glass factory in KOKAIDO.
There was no noticeable fluctuation of tide.
The airfield and the entire peninsula were guarded by the 3rd bn, 76 Regt stationed on the field.
The W coast of the peninsula had steep banks about 1-2 m above water level, and small wooden, cargo ships docked directly against it.
Heard that the W coast of the peninsula was fortified. However, details were not available.
See attached sketch.
