2. ASSESSMENT:
PW is against communism because his sister is still confined in a prison in P'YONGYANG for defying and disobeying orders of the NK government. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
18 Jun 50: PW was inducted into the NKPA at P'YONGYANG and was immediately attached to the 11th General Hospital as a Capt (總尉).
21 Jun 50: The 11th General Hospital left P'YONGYANG by train.
23 Jun 50: Arrived P'YONGGANG. After the war started, the 11th General Hospital handled patients evacuated from the field hospital in HWACH'ON.
8 Jul 50: The 11th General Hospital departed P'YONGGANG by train.
9 Jul 50: Arrived SEOUL, departed same day by truck.
12 Jul 50: Arrived SUWON and started operating at the prefectural Hospital. The 11th General Hospital was the only hospital handling all patients evacuated from various field hospitals. Patients treated at 11th General Hospital were transferred to a permanent hospital in rear echelon.
17 Jul 50: A school located 700 m from Prefectural Hospital, also used by 11th General Hospital, was strafed by aircraft. One patient was killed and several others wounded.
19 Jul 50: 11th Army Hospital was transferred to Agricultural College in SUWON. PW states that none of the buildings used by 11th Army Hospital in SUWON was marked with a red cross for identification purpose. PW was head of surgical section handling minor wounds only. It was the smallest surgical section within the 11th General Hospital, their bed capacity being 40. It was composed of the PW, one doctor from the SK Volunteer Corps, one woman doctor, and three medical college students. They processed 4 to 500 patients during the 2 week period in SUWON.
28 Jul 50: The 11th General Hospital left SUWON by train and arrived in CH'ONAN. They immediately departed on trucks.
3 Aug 50: Arrived TAEJON. The 11th General Hospital was originally composed of five (5) surgical sections and one medical section but it was reorganized into four (4) surgical departments.
16 Aug 50: The four surgical departments were separated. 1st Dept was stationed in CHOCH'IWON, the 3rd Dept at YONGDONG, and 2nd and 4th Depts at a point 8 km West of KUMCH'ON. PW was head of the 4th Dept.
17 Aug 50: The 4th Surgical Dept of the 11th General Hospital arrived at a point 6 km West of KUMCH'ON where they were located under the concrete arches of a RR bridge. The 2nd Surgical Dept was located in a temple 8 km West of KUMCH'ON. The 4th Surgical Dept handled an average of 200 patients a day and the seriously wounded patients were immediately transferred to the 3rd Surgical Dept located in YONDONG for further treatment. The complicated cases which the 3rd Surgical Dept was unable to handle were transferred to the newly organized 25th General Hospital located in TAEJON. PW heard that another hospital, the 24th General Hospital, had been organized and was located in CHOCH'IWON.
29 Aug 50: The 2nd and 4th Surgical Depts departed KUMCH'ON Area by trucks.
30 Aug 50: Arrived at KOCH'ANG area where the 4th Surgical Dept was located at a point 8 km North of KOCH'ANG. The 1st Surgical Dept, which was at CHOCH'IWON, also arrived and they were located, together with the 2nd Surgical Dept, at a point immediately South of SIN'GI-DONG.
11 Sep 50: The 4th Surgical Dept moved into KOCH'ANG and the 1st Surgical Dept moved to NAEDONG (내동) (6 km NW of HYOPCH'ON). The 2nd Surgical Dept was reorganized and a part of the unit moved to MYOSAN (妙山) (8 km NW of HYOPCH'ON) as the 5th Surgical Dept. The 2nd Surgical Dept moved to CHINJU. The 4th Surgical Dept handled a minimum of 250 patients and a maximum of 600 patients per day.
20 Sep 50: PW was promoted to Maj (少佐)
25 Sep 50: The 4th Surgical Dept received orders to retreat immediately to CHANGGYE-RI. All walking wounded were ordered to start waling. It was possible to hire enough stretcher bearers for only 12 patients. The remaining 120 patients were left behind. PW and all staff members of the Surgical Dept started walking.
27 Sep 50: Arrived at CHANGGYE-RI but departed immediately for TAEJON.
28 Sep 50: PW arrived at TAEJON after hitchhiking on a truck together with 4 nurses aides. The truck was destroyed by aircraft in TAEJON and the PW started for MUNUI but changed his course after learning that MUNUI was already occupied.
30 Sep 50: PW was hiding in the mountains near HOEIN but was flushed out by rifle fire and was captured by ROK forces.

Organization and Strength of Unit:
1. Original organization and strength: The head of the 11th General Hospital was a Lt Col (中佐). The asst was a political officer with a rank of Capt (總尉). The political training unit, propaganda unit, and a staticstics unit was under the direct jurisdiction of the political officer (Capt).
The intendance section, personnel section, and an overall statistics section were under the direct jurisdiction of the head of the hospital. The Intendance Section directed the ration unit, supplementary food unit, food requisition unit, food preparation unit, finance unit, clothing supply unit, and laundry unit.
The Personnel Section directed the movement of personnel and also controlled approximately 15 hospital guards. The Overall Statistics Section handled the records of the patients treated at the hospital. The chief was a woman doctor.
The Operation Units of the 11th General Hospital was composed of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Surgical Sections, a Medical Section, and a Pharmacy Section. The 1st Surgical Section was composed of a chief surgeon (Maj 少佐), a doctor (Capt 總尉), a head nurse (Jr Lt 少尉), a supply nurse, 5 to 6 nurses, and 20 nurses aid. This section was designated as the reception unit.
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Surgical Sections were composed of 1 Chief Surgeon, 2 surgeons, a head nurse, a supply nurse, 7 to 8 nurses and 20 to 30 nurses aides. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th as well as 4th sections were responsible for general surgery, abdominal surgery, chest surgery and head surgery, respectively.
The Medical Section was composed of a physician, a woman physician, a head nurse, a supply nurse, 5 to 6 nurses, and 5 to 6 nurses aides. The Pharmacy Section was composed of two pharmacists, a nurse, and a pharmacist helper. The total bed capacity of the 11th Army Hospital was 500 beds. The total personnel was approximately 150.
2. Actual battle organization and strength: As of 28 Jul 50, the operation units of the 11th Army Hospital were completely reorganized. The five surgical sections, the medical section and the pharmacy section were combined and 4 surgical departments were organized. Each surgical dept was organized with provisions to operate independently. Large number of doctors, nurses, and nurses aides arrived from the SK Volunteer Corps and joined the 11th General Hospital at SUWON. Details of the 4 surgical departments are as follows:
The 1st Surgical Dept was composed of 8 doctors and 60 nurses and nurses aides. The 2nd Surgical Dept was composed of 10 doctors and 85 nurses and nurses aides. The 3rd Surgical Dept was composed of 10 doctors and 70 nurses and nurses aides. The 4th Surgical Dept was composed of 3 doctors, 3 medical students and 50 nurses and nurses aides. The total bed capacity was increased to 1,000 beds.

Equipment:
As of 28 Jul 50, the 11th General Hospital was equipped with 10 trucks and 2 ambulances but on 15 Sep 50 they possessed only 6 operable trucks and one ambulance. The hospital guards (15 men) possessed rifles and submachine guns.

Unit History:
The 11th General Hospital was organized at P'YONGYANG on 18 Jun 50 and the head of the P'YONGYANG Central Hospital became the head of the 11th Army Hospital. The nucleus of the 11th Army Hospital was formed by the staff members of the P'YONGYANG Central Hospital. On 22 Sep 50, the original head of the 11th Army Hospital returned to SEOUL and he was replaced by a Lt Col (中佐) who arrived from P'YONGYANG.

Knowledge of other units:
PW heard that the 24th and 25th Army Hospitals organized in SEOUL during Jul 50 were composed of members drafted into the SK Volunteer Corps and they were the next higher echelon above the 11th General Hospital. PW states that the 11th General Hospital was the only one of its kind in the NKPA.

Personalities:
(1) Own unit: The original commanding officer of the 11th General Hospital was Col (大佐) CH'OE T'ae Ho (崔泰鎬) a graduate of the HSINKING Medical College. The replacement CO of the 11th General Hospital was Lt Col (中佐) HYON T'aeu (玄泰佑). A medical bureau was formed under the Defense Ministry and Lt Col HYON T'aeu served as asst chief of the Medical Bureau prior to his assignment to the 11th General Hospital.

Morale and Propaganda:
PW believes that the morale of the doctors and nurses working under him was fairly high. They were led to believe that the NKPA was fighting a winning war. Therefore, they were greatly disillusioned when their unit received orders to retreat.

4. GENERAL:
The 11th General Hospital suffered from an acute shortage of bandages, tetanus anti-toxin, hypodermic needles, blood coagulating agents, ringea solution, emetin, glucose, salicyl and aspirin.
The hospital handled all patients sent from the various field hospitals and according to regulation, it treated patients whose period of treatment did not exceed 12 days. All patients requiring major operations and longer treatment were transferred to a rear echelon hospital or to permanent hospitals in SEOUL or P'YONGYANG.
The number of deaths recorded at the 11th General Hospital was approximately 5% of the total number of patients treated and 99% of the deaths were due to tetanus. PW states that immunization was never given for protection against communicable diseases. Whole blood transfusion was given only once and blood plasma was never used.
