PW was cooperative, but his military information was very limited. Not recommended for further interrogation.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
22 Aug 50 - PW was inducted into the NKPA at SINUIJU.
25 Aug 50 - Was given the rank of Sgt (中士) and departed SINUIJU by truck together with 300 men.
31 Aug 50 - Arrived in SEOUL and a group of 150 men were given the rank of Jr. Lt. (少尉). Left SEOUL on 3 trucks.
2 Sep 50 - Arrived in TAEJON and were given a special examination for the purpose of classification. PW was classified as an Engineer Officer.
7 Sep 50 - PW, together with a group of 15 officers, was ordered to join the CHINJU Brig. Departed by truck.
9 Sep 50 - Arrived at NAMWON.
11 Sep 50 - Departed NAMWON on foot.
20 Sep 50 - A group of 13 officers arrived in SANCH'ONG and the PW was immediately assigned the the 3rd Plt, Eng. Bn., CHINJU Brig. as a Plt Ldr.
22 Sep 50 - The CHINJU Brig. was ordered to retreat to NAMWON from SANCH'ONG.
25 Sep 50 - Arrived in NAMWON and the CHINJU Brig was disbanded. PW immediately left NAMWON together with 5 other officers and headed for CHONJU (全州).
27 Sep 50 - Arrived at a point 20 km south of CHONJU and heard that it was already occupied. They entered the mountains and headed for TAEJON.
2 Oct 50 - Arrived 8 km north of KUMSAN and encountered US Forces. PW surrendered together with 4 other officers.
Unit Organization and Strength:
Was unable to give any detailed information because he was attached to the CHINJU Brig for only one day. The Eng Bn of the CHINJU Brig was composed of 55 men and the PW states that he was the only member of the 3rd Plt Eng Bn, CHINJU Brig.
Equipment:
The Eng Bn of the CHINJU Brig did not possess any equipment.
Unit History:
PW heard that the CHINJU Brig was organized 20 Aug 50 and they were in the process of gathering the men from the SEOUL and TAEJON areas.
Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the group of 150 officers who were dispatched from SEOUL was very low because they were conscripted under duress into the NKPA and they were sent to the front without any training. PW read a US propaganda leaflet once in the KUMSAN area. They were repeatedly told that they would be shot if captured by the UN Forces but PW states that he decided to surrender, if occasion permitted. after reading the propaganda leaflet.
