PW seemed reliable. However information limited.
Military History:Date inducted 27 Jan 50 at KANGONG (杆城). 89 others also conscripted with PW.
Training: PW assigned to the 1st Inf Brig, 3rd Bn, AT Rifle Platoon. Composition and strength of 1st Brig unknown. Very little training on AT rifles (fired 2 rounds). Cadres was N. Korean officers and NCO’s. No. Russian observed.
Tactical Movements:
25 Jun 50 - 1st Inf Brig departed KANSONG on foot.
2 Jul 50 - 1st Inf Brig arrived KANGNUNG. 1st Inf Brig reorganized, personnel redistributed, and designated the 8th Inf Div.
7 Jul 50 - 8th Div departed NANGNUNG on foot.
12 Jul 50 - 8th Div captured P’YONGCH’ANG.
14 Jul 50 - 8th Div departed P’YONGCH’ANG on foot.
18 Jul 50 - 8th Div captured CHECH’ON.
25 Jul 50 - 8th Div departed CHECH’ON on foot.
2 Aug 50 - 8th Div occupied YECH’ON
6 Aug 50 - 8th Div occupied ANDONG
16 Aug 50 - 8th Div occupied UISONG
17 Aug 50 - Ind AT Bn committed for the first time. Counterattacked by ROK forces S of UISONG. PW wounded by small arms fire, then captured.
Personalities:CG, 8th Div - P PAEK YONG (吳百龍) (오백룡), rank Maj Gen, age 45. Served in the Manchurian Communist Army together with KIM IL SONG (金日成) (김일성).
Weapons and Personnel:Independent AT Bn: Composed of 2 x rifle companies of 130 men each, 1 x 45 mm gun company of 80 men, 1 x AT company of 88 men. Composition and armament of rifle companies similar to other NKPA rifle companies.
45mm Gun company: 3 x 45mm M1942 guns (All three destroyed by aerial attacks near YECH’ON (1140-1530). Guns not replaced). Personnel of this company arrived with Russian, bolt operated rifles. AT rifle company: 30 x 14.5mm PTRS-41 and 14.5mm PTRD-41 AT rifles. Remainder of personnel armed with Russian bolt operated rifles. Entire battalion armed with 2 x F-1 defensive handgrenades. Weapons at time of capture were in good condition.
Strength, at time of capture, 70% of above-mentioned figures. UN air attacks accounted for most of the casualties.
Armor:At the start of the was, observed 10 x SU-76, assigned to the 8th Div. Observed only 5 x SU-76 just north of place of capture. Heard that missing 5 were destroyed by UN aerial attacks. No tanks observed up to time of capture.
Enemy Intentions:Immediate objective of 8th Div - YONGCH’ON (1190-1450) (永川).
EEIInformant head from officers of this unit that a large group of Koreans from the 8th Chinese Communist Army reinforced the 7th Div sometime in the middle of Jul 50. Location of 7th Div at that time, unknown. Heard, at time of capture, that the 7th Div was adjacent to the 8th Div.
