Cooperative, date and place names unreliable.

T/O of PW’s Unit:
5th Division consisted of 4 Regts, 10th, 11th, 12th rifle Regts and an artillery Regt. An engineer Bn was attached to 5th Div.
12 Regt consisted of 4 rifle Bns, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Rifle Bns and one sub-machine gun Bn.
1st Bn consisted of 4 Cos, 1st, 2nd, 3rd Rifle Cos and one HMG Co.
1st Co consisted of 3 rifle plts and one medical plt which had five men.
2nd Plt consisted of 4 rifle sqds.

Disposition of above Units:
PW stated that 1st Co of 1st Bn, in 12th Regt, was attached to 11th Regt at YONGDOK on 9 Aug when the 12th Regt went eastward (destination unk).
11th Regt was located approx 4 km N of YONGDOK on 9 Aug 50.
Disposition of other units unk.

Estimated Strength of Above Units:
1st Co of 1st Bn in 12 Regt had originally approximately 80 men who were equipped with rifles, sub-machine guns and LMG.
Approx 36 men were left on 9 Aug 1950.
Other units strength unknown.

Personal & Unit History:
Inducted 28 Feb 50 NANAM. Received about 3 months infantry basic training at NANAM.
5th Div departed NANAM 24 Jun 50 by rail - arrived YANGYANG 27 Jun 50.
Departed YANGYANG 29 Jun 50 - marched - arrived KANGNUNG on the same day.
1st Bn of 12th Regt remained about 5 days in KANGNUNG, when 5th Div left the town on 30 Jun 50.
1st Bn departed KANGNUNG 2 Jul 50 and arrived YONGHAE (1530-1520) via coast line. date arrived unk.
1st Co remained approx 1 month as guard unit for a former 5th Div Hqs at YONGHAE until 5 Aug 50.
1st Co departed YONGHAE 5 Aug 50 and was assigned to 11th Regt at approx 10 km S of YONGHAE on 7 Aug 50.
PW and other 4 men were separeated by machine gun firing and captured by ROK troops on 9 Aug 50.

PW observed, on serverl occasions, a Russian in 5th Div Hqs at NANAM between 30 May and 24 Jun 50.
Officers and NCO’s in 5th Div were formerly trained by CCF in MANCHURIA.

Armor:
Observed about 5 self propelled guns near UTCHIN. Date and place unk.

Artillery:
Observed about 7 artillery pieces (120 mm howitzer gun) at SAMCH’OK. Date of observation unk.

Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food and ammunition were transported to YANGYANG by train cars. From YANGYANG, trucks and ox carts were utilized to transport food and ammunition.
Last supplies of food and ammunition received at YONGHAE on 20 Jul 50. Amount of supplies received unk.

Replacements:
Received no replacements from other units.
Wounded personnel were sent back for medical attention. however, no personnel returned to their unit. Number of wounded unk.
PW stated that if any units separated from their parent units, they were to fight with other units in combat. However, if they were in rear, units could act as independent units until rejoining their parent units.

Enemy Intentions:
Co Comdr ordered his troops to fight to the last man.
PW heard among troops that ROK Forces would kill all prisoners.
Last objective of 12th Regt of 5th was POHANG-DONG via YONGDOK by 11th Aug 50.

Morale:
PW units morals was very high because troops were told that N Korean Army is fighting to save S Korean peoples who are suffering under the S Korean government’s oppression.

Captured Equipment:
Observed M-1 rifles and carbines (amount unk). This captured equipment was utilized by N Korean troops.
