Evaluation:
Limited information due to short term of military service.

Military History:
Conscripted into the “Volunteer Corps” directly from school on 10 Jul 50. Was interned at SUSONG Primary School for one night and taken to CHAEDONG Primary School for 4 days. On 15 Jul 50, departed CHAEDONG and arrived TANYANG 23 Jul 50. PW stated there were 300 members of the Volunteer Corps that arrived at TANKANG where 100 men and 00 female nurses were assigned to the 8th Division. 100 men and 9 female nurses were assigned to the 7th division. The 9 nurses were all assigned to the Medical Battalion. 35 men were assigned to Medical Battalion as guards. The other 58 men of the 7th Division were assigned to carry supplies and to do other odd jobs.
The whereabouts of the remaining 51 of the 300 is unknown. There are women being used as nurses, mostly untrained high school girl students. At TANYANG PW was issued US rifle, 18 rounds and two grenades.

Departed CH’ONGSONG 10 Aug - arrived TAEJON-DONG (1200-1490) 11 Aug 50.
Departed TAEJON-DONG 11 Aug - arrived unknown area 8 km South of TAEJON-DONG: at this point they were attached and when the unit withdrew, PW remained behind and waited until 12 Aug. On 12 Aug PW of his own volition came to TOP’YOUNG-DONG (1491-1198) to surrender and go back to his home village in KYONGSANG NAMDO, KIRYANG GUN, SANNAK MYON, SONG BAEK NI #775 (慶尙南道 基陽郡 山南面 松柏里 775)
PW was captured at TOP’YONG-DONG on 13 Aug 50. That time of capture PW was not armed. He had to hand in his weapon in TAEJONODONG because he had no experience with rifles. The rifles were then issued to hospital patients who were well enough to fight against the enemy. There were 50 hospital patients who were well enough to fight. There were no other patients in the hospital. The 7th Division hospital was in ANDONG but it has moved to an unknown area. While the hospital was in operation there were 200 nurses, 9 women from the “Volunteer Corps” and approximately 190 women were from Women Nurse Corps of the NK Peoples Army. There were 15 doctors, all male officers. Names and rank of the hospital personnel are unknown to PW. The PW was a guard at the hospital for 15 days, while the hospital was in operation.

Weapons and Personnel:
Medical battalion: officers armed with pistols. All enlisted men armed with rifles. Variety of rifles were Japanese 99 Model, US rifles, M1891/30 rifles, US carbines, 2 grenades. Two (2) female nurse NGOs with pistol. No nurses were commissioned officers. The other nurses did not carry arms.
The PW stated that while guarding the hospital at ANDONG he observed about 2,000 men come in for treatment during the 15 days. He observed ten men die in the hospital. All men brought to the hospital were wounded seriously. All wounded that could not be treated at the hospital were sent to the rear echelon hospital in CHAECH’ON or SEOUL by truck. The hospital equipment was inadequate.

Artillery:
The PW observed 6 unknown type field pieces hauled by trucks heading South 2 km South of ANDONG on or about 7 Aug 50.

Enemy Intentions:
Unknown.

Supplies:
The food at the hospital was very good compared to that in the front line. The patients and troops of the Medical Battalion were fed rice and vegetable soup twice a day. No further information.
